MYSKY To Second Room

Recommended Posts

Im guessing someone on here has done this before?

Ive done a fair bit of research, read geekzone, pc world etc and know of the many ways

to send the signal but what I need is your experiences to see what the best option is.

Not really keen on using an rf modulator as the picture quality is crap especially on an HD TV

Im thinking of the following......

From MYSKY HDMI output to a splitter or switch?, HDMI to CAT5e/6 Balun, run CAT5e/6? to second tv, second Balun then HDMI into tv.

The run is 20 odd meters so not sure how an HDMI cable will handle that kind of length.

Will also use a x-ray remote extender to change channels.

I want to get a great picture without having to spend $300-$500 which is the way it looks to be heading.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Cheers

Brett

Not cheap but... http://www.rapalloav.co.nz/products.php?vi...p;detailid=2165

Or you could go with these: http://www.rapalloav.co.nz/products.php?vi...p;detailid=1218

but seems alot of mucking around and ugly.

Cheers Troy. I know the Rapallo site inside out lol.

Was thinking these: http://www.rapalloav.co.nz/product/1477/HD...t5/6-Extenders/

Will need to split/switch the HDMI out from the MYSKY box first.

I've done this.

Was simple with the older decoder due to better outputs.

But I have made it work with MYsky HDI.

few things to note.

-MYSky HDI has only one HDMi output, the only other free output is AV. (well on my box anyway)

-Those range extending remotes don't freakin work good enough. I've sent back two which looked the biz but didn't work at all.

-Loading up the HDMI port with a splitter killed my last tv's HDMI port.

I used this AV out to a channel converter box I found online which provided AV in to coaxial cable which I already had cabled through to the bedroom. You could just run AV lines all the way as they would be okay and not expensive.

Don't bother with expensive cabling since the source is AV it's a waste of money.

Yes the picture isn't 1080 or anything like that, but it's watchable.

You can't change channels without getting out of bed, but I just watch discovery anyway.

I would advise before you do anything, grab a small tv if you can and a bunch of cables and check the output's from your sky box. Test your setup before you invest in expensive cabling.

All up this AV based setup cost less than $100.

I use my houses wifi. Input into my G4 in the lounge which can then put it over wireless to the iMac upstairs. Its a pretty sweet setup. The card is some chineese sh*t that came through work but its good for free haha. dunno what that would cost you though, and depends if you have a computer or two lying around. Pretty sweet being able to watch youtube on tv too

I have an amplified HDMI splitter that goes into 2 other rooms (besides the lounge) and the picture is great, even with all 3 TV's going (like last saturday with the Tua fight) and there were no problems at all.

For the remotes i purchased 3 DSE analogue transmitters off TM for cheap and set them up on each tv just for the remote extender then programmed some universal remotes for the other tv's and voila.

Was a pretty cheap setup approx $100-150

It WAS far more simpler with the old digital box!

I was aware of the one HDMI output on the Mysky box, hence the need for a splitter/switch to send an HDMI cable to the two tvs. I have an RF convertor and have tried it......the picture quality is rubbish. Doesnt warrent having a HD TV.

I looked into a strait run with HDMI cable but 20m is very long. One with a built in amplifier was needed ($289)

The x-ray remote extender I was talking about is this: http://www.nexgensmarthome.co.nz/ I know a number of people with them and they work VERY well.

Now this sounds like a future-proofed answer.

How have you set this up andy, if you don't mind me asking? I do have a few old laptops lying around...

HDMI cable split tv > laptop ? You would need some software to run this?

remote in from your other laptop over wifi?

(sorry I'm a PC man so trying to work this back from mac world)

That makes two of us!

I was wrapped to get a nice all in one wall plate setup that doesnt require power, runs 1 x Cat5e cable over the distance I have & achieves at least 720p resolution all for just under $100.

If I have time I might do a mock up tonight to see how it goes before I start cutting holes in walls and running cables. <_<

Paul, I'd say this can be done. You'd just have to record to the DVD recorder in real time thou.
