E34 Coding Plug

Recommended Posts

I have a 92 535i Sport and have just installed an instrument cluster from a 93 M5 3.8.

Where abouts can I get a coding plug reprogrammed for it (not the stealer!).

The speedo is reading about 10k off at 100k. Anybody in auckland can do this for me?

I can get a blank plug easily enough.

If nobody can help I might try this and see what happens.

Im not so confident with the whole solder rewire hex edit thing.

Argh.

Here are the parameters:

The code plug is essentially an EEPROM (the 93C56 circuit) that contains information such as

- scaling factor for the speedometer (including the rear differential ratio)

- scaling factor for the tachometer

- scaling factor for the fuel gauge

- number of engine cylinders (4,6,8,12)

- data about fuel consumption

- info if econometer or oil temperature gauge

- km vs miles

- fuel tank size (80,81,90)

- data about service interval

- odometer

- chassis number

- code plug number

- BMW specific number

- software version

No dial swapping will fix this - will need a recode unfortunately.

Get two types of plugs and note down the fvalues of each EG odometer, chassie number etc.

Find someone with an eprom burner/reader that will take that chip.

Read in the binary. Use a hex editor to read the BIN in.

Try a straight hex to acsii conversion as they are likely stored in clear text and dont use an offset value.

Make your changes to the block addresses and reburn the eprom and re-install.

I would help but I really have enough on my plate with other project im working on.
