96 E39 540i Drivesahft problems

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, i wondered if anyone could shed some light on a problem im having with my E39.

I had the centre bearing hanger replaced on my driveshaft a couple of months back and it got rid of the horrible noise I was having but im still getting vibrations and horrendous wheel shake when braking 90% of the time.

Sometimes if I give it a boot full there is no vibrations or harsh shaking when braking. Its almost like by giving it the beans is straightens itself out?

Also when its really wet outside and the spray gets to the driveshaft I can hear it knocking against the underneath of the car. This was happening before i got the centre bearing done and still happens now but only in really wet conditions.

I wonder if maybe my driveshaft is not balanced properly or something.....

Has anyone else had something similar?

fyi I've replaced the engine mounts, gearbox and diff mounts and the thrust arm bushings are good. It has new tyres, all properly balanced and aligned etc. Discs are not warped either.

Is there a place in NZ that does refurbished driveshafts for BMW's?

Cheers in advance guys!

Im down in Wellington,

The spare driveshaft you have... How old is it? What sort of price are you looking for it?

96 540i 120k , will fit a new centre hanger bearing $275.

can also supply rubber coupling for extra new or used

bump, anyone else had something similar to this?

With the symptoms you've discribed you need to replace your oil filled thrust arm bushes (front suspension)

Just did mine, feels like a new car and no more shimmy under braking, hard accelration or 80kph wobble. You have the added bonus of chrisp turn in general solid feel to taking corners.

Agreed... if they "look" fine, then they could be an ANY condition.

Mine looked fine, no cracks or distortion, but were the originals and were rooted - I fitted powerflex, and the car is a different car. (mine is a bit different being a 6 cylinder, but similar issues - only ever shimmied at 80ish and only ever under light brakes)

If you're pulling apart the front end, just do the lot.

Could you send me the link to the powerflex bushings for the E39? Im going to replace them and would prefer something more substantial than the original parts....

I got mine from ebay uk - can't do links - no ebay at work! Seller was strutbracer I think - was quite cheap compared to other places. I mostly liked the idea of not having to press them in, although the front lower arm bushes needed a "adjustment" to fit anyway - they are too large diamterter on the outer flange, so I machined them down, but some just trim them with a craft knife or hacksaw.

Car doesn't feel overly harsh, not really any different, otherthan the whhels seem to go where you point them (old bushes were originals with 120K on them).

anyone used these guys?

http://www.nzad.co.nz/

they do the powerflex bushes and are in NZ..which is a bonus

thinking of doing all the bushes in one hit....see what they price up a full kit as...

anyone know what the standard front & rear anti roll bar sizes would be on a '02 M5?
