blonky 2 Report post Posted November 21, 2012 Hi all, my vehicle is a 1996 318is converted from auto to manual, I had the diff finally replaced with a manual one (3.45?) and not long after the car began vibrating/rumbling violently from around the driveshaft when I take off quickly but it's not noticeable if I take off slowly. It only occurs for a couple of seconds around 2000 - 3000rpms approx Any ideas?
*Glenn* 854 Report post Posted November 21, 2012 (edited) Guibo, centre hangar, UJ's or something loose. The selector rod may be around the wrong way and touching the guibo Edited November 21, 2012 by *Glenn*
blonky 2 Report post Posted November 25, 2012 Guibo, centre hangar, UJ's or something loose. The selector rod may be around the wrong way and touching the guibo Thanks Glenn I notice it kind of sounds like it's coming from around the left rear axle near the diff, would this still be caused by the above? *Glenn* 854 Report post Posted November 26, 2012 (edited) Ask the people who did the conversion & diff replacement if they could kindly take a look at it. There maybe something loose. BTW: where are you located ? Edited November 26, 2012 by *Glenn*
blonky 2 Report post Posted May 10, 2013 Update: Finally got around to jacking it up and taking a look, turns out the center bearing is worn so under acceleration the driveshaft rubs against the body See photo: This is also called the center hanger? Thanks for your help Glenn
Michael. 2313 Report post Posted May 10, 2013 What part of the driveshaft is contacting the body?
euroriffic 609 Report post Posted May 10, 2013 That took a looong time to sort that out Lol. My e30 used to do that too
blonky 2 Report post Posted May 17, 2013 What part of the driveshaft is contacting the body? Just past the center hanger (diff side). Under torque the hanger flexed enough for the driveshaft to just touch the body. The gearbox mounts were also shot which made the flexing even worse and probably caused the center hanger to perish - we fitted E39 mounts which are meant to be stiffer That took a looong time to sort that out Lol. My e30 used to do that too Yeah, car was put on hold for a few months so only decided to sort it now Anyway replacing both makes everything so much smoother, there's no jolt when changing gears and no rumbling
