Headlight bulbs - yellow

Recommended Posts

Has anyone seen where you can buy yellow headlight bulbs? I checked the LTSA website and it is legal to have white or amber lights on the front of your car so I'm looking at putting yellow bulbs into the main lights of my E30. This is purely cosmetic, I realise that the whiter the bulb the better but yellow headlamps look really cool on old cars in my opinion.

I'm not keen to put a film over the main lights as this apparently is illegal, would look cool though.

I've looked at the Supercheap website and given Repco a call and they don't seem to have anything. Also did a Google search but no joy. Anyone got any ideas or know of websites that specialise in bulbs?

Hmm, this is straight from the NZTA website 'Get Your Lights Right' page.

Maybe the girl from Supercheap was wrong?

Main beam headlamps

Main beam headlamps are used for lighting the way a long way ahead of the vehicle. Because they are not dipped, they will dazzle other road users if not used properly. (Dipped beam and main beam headlamps are often combined into one lamp.) Additional main beam headlamps are also known as ‘driving lamps’.

Fitting requirements (original equipment)

Most motorcycles, cars and trucks are fitted with one or two main beam headlamps as original equipment.

Main beam headlamps must be white or amber in colour.

Tinting

It is illegal to apply any kind of tint film, tint paint or opaque sticker to any lamp which has a function other than decoration (eg non-cosmetic).

Seems fine?

My old starlet had all yellow front lamps and I see another one round town with them and I never had a wof issue with them. I also have yellow covered highbeam lenses on my touring as do many other guys and I havn't had a wof issue with them either so I'm sure youl be sweet.

I was able to get yellow H7 (or could be H3) bulbs for the fog lights of my old car last year at Greenlane Repco, not sure if you have tried them yet.

I've got yellow films over my high beams for a while now, went through several check points, had cops in front and opposite me and they were never an issue. 99% of the time the cops have better things to do than pull someone over for yellow tinted lights, unless the car itself has boy-racer mods that attract unwanted attention.

I will be getting a VTNZ wof in a months time, will be interesting to see whether they are anal about them.

You seem to be missing the point about putting film on the lens - it changes the photometric properties (which means you can see less when you need them most or you dazzle other drivers because the light scatters all over the place).

The legal yellow lamps actually use a tinted lens material - not a film, paint or yellow bulb. And they are legal because they are designed to function in that colour, and still meet the legal performance requirements (with the appropriate testing and certification processes).

I agree that the yellow ones can look cool on the right car, but just go and buy some proper yellow headlamps.

3000k HID kits are cheap :P

and illegal. but not that dangerous if you have projector type headlights and adjust them correctly.

I reckon Stock Reflector type HID's are worse than dodgy projector halogen housings with HID's in them.

Or, wait till I build me a set of these :)
