E39 aircon issue

Recommended Posts

I have this problem where the heater fan is running constantly even when the key is removed from the ignition and the aircon display is totally dead. this happened very suddenly after getting out of the car last night. to stop the fan from draining the battery I have disonnnected the battery. can anyone give me some tips as to what the problem might be? and how can I isolate the fan in the meantime?

Final stage resistor unit, very common, luckily it's not too hard to replace. Ray at Hell BM might be able to sort you a replacement. I've changed two in my E39 in the past.

Thanks for quick reply, but where is this resistor?

As stated a common problem get a new one as they have been improved upon, pull the heater fuse from the main fuse box the card should tell you which one it is.

Left hand side of the drivers foot well it's behind the covers tucked away in the heater matrix, plenty of write ups on how to replace them about 20 minutes from memory.

Probably the dealer if you need one ASAP, but I doubt it'll be all the cheap there.

Got it fixed thanks to Brent at BM World, turned out to be a dead control module rather than fsr. thanks for all the info and BIG thanks to Brent.
