The BBS E30 restoration

Recommended Posts

This is my BMW325i not looking the best at this stage. I've had this car about 6 years and it started life as a 320i auto. this was quickly changed to the B25. Then it had it's 2.5 blown going on 2 years ago now. So hauled the motor out and so it sat there for 2 years while i drove around my newly aquired at the time E30M50B25 (since sold). finaly got around to dropping in a 2.5 from a pfl with the higher compresion and got that going just before i travelled over seas. I'm back now and ready to make this car into what i always wanted.

What drew me to buy this car all those years ago was that it had a full BBS body kit on it and a nice set of orriginal BBSRS003 the guy i got it off didnt know what these were worth! neither did i at the time though HAH!

Anyway here it is and here are some pics of it in its dirty state. But not for long!

sorry i'll clean and take photos on not an iphone in the near future.

The Matchbox E30 is a nice touch :) Had no idea BBS did aero kits too. Is this just an E30 thing or did they do kits for later models as well?

Wil be following this one with interest

I've seen them on e21s and e30s. Some e28s are sporting bbs fronts but I haven't seen side or rear skirts. The bbs front spoiler looks pretty similar to the zender on the e28s.

Sooo, long time no posts.

Been saving my money and seeing as a bunch of parts are arriving thought it was time to update.

Start with wheels.

shame to see an original set of RS003 looking like that. So threw em in the oven and split them and had some new lips made up (2.5 and 2' Barrels are 6') by Gavin Bateman thanks to Jasjot heaps for putting me onto him and helping me out a whole heap finding what i needed.

They arived a while ago but had to order new caps and the centers are still being painted.

I'm heading over seas again from june to september so wont be painting the car before i leave :( This means the bodykit is staying off for another 4 months...

Anyway i wanted to lower the car just the right amount on the wheels when they are done, so i went down the coilover path and these arrived today :D

In order for these to fit i needed the 51mm struts as mine was a 320i, a friend had a wrecker and he was happy to swap as long as the body of the wrecker was still rolling, so i did the swap

I didn't have the part that you conect the main cable to, that sits on the firewall. At the moment i've got a jetski part : / it's not solid but i'm not driving the car at the moment. would like the original with the cap. If anyones got one gimmie a yell.

Did you get the standard spring rates with the BCs? I find the e36 ones are slightly too soft for my liking, too much guard rub ;)

Yeah 6kg ones front and rear. i've read a lot of guys saying they prefer the 8kgs in the rear in the E30. But i wanna get the fronts in and give it a few months first and if im not satisfied i'll order some 8's

who certified your ones?

Haven't got around to certing it yet as wanted to do a few more things first. 6/8 is standard for the e36 but with the extra weight of the touring I think 8/10 might be more suitable.

There is only one guy in Christchurch now who does certs Don Mclean - not sure on his last name but will be on the NZTA website.

Thats okay i dont think ill be driving the beemer too much before i leave.

Ill book it in before i go and get the old man to drop it down when he has time.

Did you get the drop you wanted out of the BC's?

And hows the ride been round chch roads other than your gaurd rub?

Up front yes, they will go lower than you will ever need. I would like a little more in the rear which is also why I would like 10k spring in the rear.

The roads, yea well I used to live in Dallington and it wasnt the greatest but everywhere else they ride like a dream.

Spent most of the day preparing and finishing off my RSs.

So happy with how they look.

Just letting them cure for the next 24 hours then one more coat of silicone and theyre done!

Except the bbs center caps, theyre on the way though.

Few pics of the week just been.

Better pics to come once i have sorted rear guards, bit of rub with the 8.5s if pushed into a corner.

Also put some BC golds in my freinds pfl.

I still need to do a write up on this as it seems daunting when reading about it on the internet, but it could not be easier!

Got my center caps and thought id take the car for a decent drive seeing as i havnt since i threw the new engine in.

Car went great!

Although when i got home i could hear a hissing, and it looks as though the intake manifold is leaking past the gasket at one of the ports.

But i think it may have been there before my drive and would explain the very occasional fuel smell i would get in the engine bay.

Will replace in next few days.

Anyway heres some pics from today.

I really need to get a camera

Are you running 50 or 55 profile tyres?

Just 50, needs a little guard work in the rear though. But for casual driving it is okay.

Dam that looks good. Those red caps really set it off. Just needs a euro plate filler to clean the rear end IMO
