wolliver 1 Report post Posted May 3, 2014 So my baby is packing a sad, throwing a tanty. It's a 87 pfl E30 325 converted to manual with 1.3 ECU upgrade. Currently its missing horribly while accelerating and will miss not so much when cruising along, but will get worse if going up hill. Another issue ive been having is id be driving along fine and then all of a sudden the car would kind of die. So if revs were 2000 they would drop to 500 all of a sudden then about half a second later would jump back up to 2000 causing car to lurch horribly. And it would do this quite often. I disconnected the battery terminal for a couple hours and the problem went away almost. Any thoughts?
_ethrty-Andy_ 2132 Report post Posted May 3, 2014 I would start by checking spark plug leads are snug over the spark plugs If so, pull them back off, check resistance of the spark leads, they should all be around 6k ohms then check dizzy cap and rotor is in good condition. (none of these things will be picked up if you 'scanned' the vehicle, engine is to old for that) post back results and can move on from there etc

Etwenty1 45 Report post Posted May 3, 2014 Not one of the wise ones I had very similar symptoms on a 4cyl and it was the throttle position switch. I found it hard to check with a dmm but the click test was conclusive.Google e30 check tps.

_ethrty-Andy_ 2132 Report post Posted May 4, 2014 more common to be called stomp test which doesn't work on most NZ cars
e30ftw 410 Report post Posted May 4, 2014 TPS click test is checking you hear a click noise when it closes. Motor doesn't need to be running, just turn the throttle by hand slightly and you should hear the TPS click as it opens / closes. Check for vacuum leaks.
