New and looking for advice

Recommended Posts

Hi Team

I'm new to this site, but I love my BM's so thought I would join up.

My family and I have always had BMW's, and have always loved them

Currently:

Dad: E60 545i

Mum: E46 318i Coupe

Partner: E46 318i

Myself: E46 320i Msport

I am looking at upgrading my current E46 320i Msport to a E90 320i Msport.

I have found a nicely spec'd model for sale at a local dealer, and just had a couple of questions

1. I have read a lot about the fuel pump, is this still a valid issue?

2. The iDrive, how to I check if this works 100% in NZ? (Not worried about GPS)

Anything else I should know about?

I know that I will have the response about getting a 325, 330 etc etc. but I rack up a lot of miles in and around town, so fuel efficiency is a biggie.

I would love an M3, but have a budget of 20k, so there goes that (would only go E46 due to childhood dream)

Any help on the E90 would be hugely appreciated.

Cheers

I would suggest not to. The N42 & N46 engines (4 cylinder valvetronic) in BMW's can be nightmares for mechanical failures and high cost maintenance repairs. The 6 cylinder versions are far better and more reliable. I suggest you Google a bit more and do a little more research before going ahead.

I second Glen.

Avoid the N46 motor at all costs.

Trust me, I own one.

Think of it this way: buying the 4 cylinder version will quite possibly cost you in repairs. Spend that money on the difference in fuel consumption. You'll get a far nicer, smoother and more suitable engine without the issues of the 4 cylinder. The E90 is not a light car and a 4 cylinder is a bit low rent for the size and weight of the car.

Hi Team

Thanks very much for the replies.

There was a few variants that made the 320 particularly appealing to me including low kms, and the trade in price for my old one, so I have decided to buy it.

As I mentioned earlier, I know that the 325 etc would've been a bit more bang for buck, and a much better motor (from what I have read) but I am excited to own this new set of wheels.

Is there any info about my original questions re iDrive and fuel pump?

Cheers, Josh
