samo455 7 Report post Posted September 19, 2014 steep 1 engine out steep 2 clean up my dirty engine bay iv been looking at the vorslag mount kit not to buy but to copy I'm to cheap to do it properly also iv noticed the Americans have an advantage of the starter and steering rack being on opposite sides leaving room for headers however with a turbo it will only need to exit out one side well i hope
samo455 7 Report post Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) here are my vorslag mount copy i bacillary copied them from Google images the engine was setup for my cousins race car so already has rear sump but it sits way to low so going to have to do something about that at some stage but in gets the engine in so i can at least make the mounts any way i took a bottle of rum to a mate who had a closed down parts shop and walked away with some nolathen rubbers to make the mounts with and a combination of left over steel from a bull bar i built for a mate hears the result monro gt shock sticker for professional look Edited September 19, 2014 by samo455

Michael. 2313 Report post Posted September 20, 2014 Awesome! I just copied the Vorshlag style for my 1UZ V8 E36, not a bad mount design, but it does transfer a bit of vibration... Did you not consider the LS1 going into an E46? That was probably my biggest regret with the conversion using an E36, just don't feel anywhere as a nice as an E46 as an overall car. samo455 7 Report post Posted September 20, 2014 totally agree wanted to do e46 tried to swap my e30 for one but didn't have much luck and I'm rather impatient plus iv own this one for a while now probably couldn't part with it anyway
Herbmiester 924 Report post Posted September 21, 2014 (edited) I have bought my E36 for this purpose, I was just waiting on Vorshlag to finish their RHD kit, but it looks like that will take a while. Anyway I am off to LA in January and will look at buying an LS1 and T56 while I am there, probably go for an L33 5.3 as they are a lot cheaper than an LS1. I was also considering the Samberg kit as they say it will work for RHD. I believe one of the big advantages of using an E36 is that getting the electrics wired up is a lot easier. I have read (so its not 100% gospel) that the more sophisticated E46 system makes getting gauges and everything working quite tricky. I believe someone is working on a CANBUS communication setup. Anyway I hope that you have kept all your measurements etc when you created the mounts as I suspect your advice may be sought by more than me. Best of luck and I look forward to seeing your progress here. Herb Edited September 21, 2014 by Herbmiester
samo455 7 Report post Posted September 21, 2014 im a bit of a back yard mach didn't measure anything maybe the bolt holes. and then just put the motor were a thought it should go made the main mount pipe a bit longer than necessary and started trimming it down until it fit then welded the mounts in place thats why you can see a change of color in the mounts the first ones got melted they were sacrificial one anyway sounds crude i no but its in the right spot and it firm the motor will have to come out to change the sump so im thinking of making a jig for them see how it gose headers down the right side looks like a mission the vorslag steering shaft would bee a must luck my headers will be going forward to turbo and exit out the left hand side i had to relocate abs unit a little bit luck for rhd we only have to move it over a bit the lhd have a dirty old brake booster in the way so they have to put it right up the front alos having the steering rack on the left means ample room for turbo exhaust to exit
Ahmedsinc 414 Report post Posted September 21, 2014 What are you planning to do with the rear end setup? Gonna run a 210mm diff? Not too sure the medium case ones will hold the torque if you're going down the forced induction route. Keep the updates coming!
samo455 7 Report post Posted September 21, 2014 yer hadn't thought that far yet whats the most done thing there 7 series rear end im guessing is it a straight forward conversion i got a few diffs lying around here but all medium case the commy manual ratio is around 345 my lsd is 373 witch i thought will make it feal more like bmw gearing nice and lively i hadn't even thought about strength
Ahmedsinc 414 Report post Posted September 21, 2014 I understand the medium case diffs are good to around 350 ft/lb, an FI LS1 will probably be well beyond that. E36 M3 used large case diff, you'll probably need to find an M3 subframe and diff then use an appropriate ratio from a 7er to match your 5th gear. Ring Kane Barrie, he's probably the most clued up cat in Nz for BMW diffs. Good luck man

Ahmedsinc 414 Report post Posted November 1, 2014 Pushrod V8 = low tech.....who cares man! This is the project I've been dreaming of doing for ages. Yes it's a dinosaur engine but 350hp & 350ft/lb returning 12l/100 is hard to argue with. More pics!!
Herbmiester 924 Report post Posted November 4, 2014 The LS engine looks like a great fit, I don't think the LS is low tech, its a bit like saying the M50 is low tech because it has an Iron Block.

Agreed, though a few people seem to look down their noses at anything less than 32 valves. I owned a VYII SS a few years back, and although the steering & brakes left quite a bit to be desired (actually the 4 speed slushbox was fairly sh*t too) I still miss the lazy-ass torque curve that 350ci and a dinosaur pushrod provided. Looking forward to seeing the dyno printouts once this suckers running
