E39 rotor / pad options

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So looks like I need either new or skimmed rotors on the front of my E39 530imotorsport.

Had them skimmed about 18months ago but got caught out by a small ford the other week & think they have warped again :-(

Didnt replace the pads last time, the garage said they gave them a rub over some grit paper & they had been ok since, also I get NO BRAKE dust so Im guessing they could be ceramic pads.

What are the options recommended for rotors / pads?, I called 4 suppliers & got at least 6 options for rotors from $67<$250 & about 60 for pads from $60 < $155!, also theres the TM seller & been quoted for Euro quality rotors by Miland BMW.

I understand that skimming rotors is not "best pracice" but my mechanic said so long as your inside the limit stamped on the rotor then its ok but then the cost of skimming is not far from the price of some new anyway.

I also understand that BMW use soft rotors & hard pads as this gives the best brake, Asian manufactures however use soft pads / hard rotors this is reflected in the prices options.

Anyone used DBA rotors, told they are up there in quality?

Ouch,

OEM BMW rotors = $540.36pr ++

Even they said if the pads look ok / not to worn they would not always change them.

Just waiting on a price for fronts only from a US ebay seller for a Brembo kit.

Rotors almost never warp. Usually the shudder is caused by pad material being left behind in one spot from hot pads stopping in one spot.

I use cheap rotors from exedy on my track car at $30 a pop. Absolutly no issues and they literally glow.

Just priced some 330ci rotors from them for my old man which were roughly 70 each.

Go oem with pads but paying 10x more for their rotor is stupid.

Is that for all 4 rotors?

I got my OEM rear rotors from BM Parts for a little over $200.

I got a set of 4 OE (Brembo, I think) rotors for my 540i for around $450 from a dealer. $560 per rotor is ridiculous.

Try some other BMW parts specialists starting with Bimmersport sponsors such as HellBM, EuroItalian, BM World, etc. Failing that try Milland.

I put genuine bmw discs and pads on my 540i about 5 years ago and have never had any issues, i put 'good' aftermarket discs and pads on my vr4 and they warped within months.

Put on the best brakes you can afford , they stop your car, save money somewhere else!

I was told by good bmw mechanic that the only time they had issues with brakes was when people used aftermarket parts.:)

No, that was just for the pair of front rotors.

So are OEM Brembo?

Now informed OEM are ATE.

+1 for NZAD rotors. Ive run them on road and track on various cars without issue.

No one has had any issues with the NZAD rotors

I paid $80 delivered for both fronts!

Can you order me a pair?, told $270/pair & non ceramic pads at $130.

OEM ATE rotors are only $44 more.

Theres an ebay seller selling ATE rotor, pad & sensor sets out of germany for very good prices, might give that a go.
