Having booked but not purchased yet a nice 3spoke M-steering wheel to install in my 540i (factory oem 4 spokes wheel) I went through a crosscheck exercise in regards to the airbag. Because my car is produced exactly on March '99 (the date BMW changed over from single stage to dual stage airbag) I thought it is wise to check the airbag itself. Took away my steering wheel ....and....BINGO !!!! Airbag production year: 2000 (and apparently a dual stage one) WTF? ???? Anyway I keep calm and start googling. Airbag recalls of E39's in 1999. francoisv 466 Report post Posted March 3, 2015 From what I've seen in mine. Single stage has 1 plug, duel stage has 2. As for the dates, I think there is some overlap as I purchased a 99 steering rack believing to be out a face lift model, but it was only single stage airbag.
