how to find production numbers by year and model?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of a resource(not Wikipedia) for looking up production numbers of BMW's by year and model?

I've spent hours searching the web with no luck. I've found total numbers of a particular model built. But I'd like to be able to break that down to ideally yearly build numbers or at the very least pre and facelift models. Like how many 95-98 E38's were built and how many 98-01 facelifts but also to be able to break that down further into models such as 728i 730i and il and so on right up to the 750i and 750il.

This is the type of information I've found so far.

For example the total build numbers for the E30.

Lots of good info on there, gives production dates for all the series (those that are listed, some are missing) but I can't find anywhere that it shows what volumes were produced in each year?

I have a breakdown of E30 production by year, model, etc. but not for E38 sorry.

You could also try putting the last 7 digits of your vin into the real oem site, it should return a 4 digit production code.

The production code is GG02 but even with that I'm not having any luck finding build numbers.

Ok, So I decided to do it this way.

I went to http://www.bmwarchive.org/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html Thanks Francois.

Using my vin as a base I worked back till I got to DA63000 built in 28/8/98 so this was the first facelift 750i. Then I went forward till I got to DA63112 which has a build date of 8/6/01. The last built.

So A grand total of 112 facelift 750i's.

I was reading a bit more about how the vins break down and learned that the D in my vin is for the plant it was built at. In this caes Dingolfing.

So all I need to do now is get the vins from 4 other plants.. ha ha. Hens teeth would be easier.

Talking to someone on another forum last night and he let me know that the other plants were building different models. One was building the 3 series and another the 5 series an so on.

Dingolfing was the dedicated 7 series plant. Yayy

Also worked out that the GG02 build code stands for RHD. GG01 is for LHD.

Knowing that we were able to figure out how many facelift 750i's were actually built.

GG01(LHD) DD9300-DD94557

GG02(RHD) DA6300-DA63112

Grand total of facelift 750i's was 1669.

And as a side note I've been blacklisted from http://www.bmwarchive.org/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html for flooding...lmao

Wowsa, man that's a lot of digging. I only used that site to see if my car (and others) are genuine Msport or just badged. 1669 doesn't sound like a lot on the grand scheme of things and I wonder how many of them are actually still alive.

Hours and hours of digging and frustration. When I get onto something like this I'm a bit like a dog with a bone. I really wanted to know and I'm glad I stuck with it.

Your right. 1669 isn't a lot of cars over 3 years of production. When I have the time I might have a go at working out the pre facelift numbers.

I want to go even further with it and see if I can find out from BMW NZ how many were brought into NZ. I'm guessing with only 112 RHD cars made it's not going to be many.
