m20 flywheel on a s50

Recommended Posts

hi guys

we have been having a few clutch issues on our s50s lately and we have just pulled mine out, the dual mass flywheel has seen better days so we are looking at what other options we have

does anybdy know what the deal is with the m20 flywheels?

we have been offered a m20 flywheel and would like to know what starter motor and thrust bearing ect we have to use

does the m20 have a different clutch and pressure plate to the e36's?

any help/advice is apreciated

I wouldn't want to run a cast iron flywheel wheel to 8000rpm.

And yeah, they need a different clutch/PP plate/throw out bearing/starter etc.

Just make one ... use the m20 one as a template minus the timing notch (which you dont need on the s50) Good chance to lighten it up ... dont go below 6.2kgs for harmonic balance at high RPM reasons, it plays havoc with the bearing caps on these long cranks. Also make sure you have your pressure plat, clutch assembly and flywheel all balanced together.

Extract the ring gear from your dual mass and have it cold pressed onto your machined one.

Use steel billet or extrude.

Heres mine I had made up and the local engineering shop. Been running years with out an issue.

we have heard that before about the cast wheels not liking high rpm

we have also thought about making one, we have all our own lathes and mills at home but its just the time factor

this morning we have been in contact with nzad and can get a chromoly 240mm flywheel for $550 so after having a converstion with them we might just looking at buying a flywheel and clutch kit from them

out of interest hoe much did it cost to have the flywheel mad up?

cheers
