E36 M3 VANOS woes.

it doesn't even need to be perfectly straight.

Ha, so elegant.

my only worry about adding metal would be that itll upset the balance. its spinning at pretty high speeds.

There's already a piece of metal missing, the balance is irrelevant now. I doubt that the amount of metal we are talking about, that close to the centre of rotation, will have a noticeable effect on the balance. If you were really worried you could get it rebalanced afterwards!

Ha, so elegant.

Not the salient point of my post. But I'm pretty sure you know that.

You guys are excellent, and this all sounds far too intense for me.

I've opted to buy another unit out of Deutschland, so if anybody ever needs a solenoid - I'll have a pair of 'em.

Might have cost you $15 at a machine shop but at least you'll have two units now.

And, as you now understand, VANOS parts are hard to come by in NZ and now you have a near complete second unit to part out to other lost souls!

All in the interest of doing it once, doing it right - I'm a raging perfectionist.

Bloody expensive personality trait, hopefully pays off!
