325_driver 422 Report post Posted August 19, 2017 Anyone with a metallic paint colour (i.e. black sapphire metallic) done a respray on their car? Reason for question is wondering if you needed to apply clear coat / lacquer to it i.e. - primer - few coats of paint / 24 hour dry - sand 1200 grit, then few coats of lacquer I've done some resprays in the past and i recently overheard a rumour that some bmw paints don't have the clear coat, or is this maybe some of the newer paints. or is this rumour a nothing-burger. Any insight would be sweet.
325_driver 422 Report post Posted August 19, 2017 Better yet if any one has painting experience could you chuck up the procedure that you did. i.e. did you sand back the metallic paint with 800+ grit lacquer ? Thanks heaps
zero 1162 Report post Posted August 19, 2017 I have black sapphire metallic paint and I resprayed some parts of the car, like front spoiler, tailgate, interior trim and wheels. I sanded all areas back thoroughly, and spray gunned on primer. Preparation is everything. Then I lightly sanded the primer, cleaned, and then spray gunned top coats and then clear coats. zero 1162 Report post Posted August 19, 2017 Yes I sanded back the paint coats and clear coats, some areas down to bare metal. I started with rough grit sandpaper and worked my way all the way down to 2000 to avoid scratches. I'm not a pro painter - there are others in here who can probably advise better than I can. 325_driver 422 Report post Posted August 19, 2017 yeah , all i needed to know bro ! thanks so much. I'm not a pro painter either, done plenty of resprays pretty well, but was just checking to see if there was anything out side of the norm. Good luck with your V8 project!
aja540i 1906 Report post Posted August 19, 2017 You shouldnt need to sand between the base coat and clear coat, just allow about 5 minutes to dry between. Are you using 2 pak clear or single pack?
325_driver 422 Report post Posted August 20, 2017 Aja probably 2 pack, anything to recommend?

325_driver 422 Report post Posted August 25, 2017 not whole car - although it got pretty tempting to - since i have to respray entire bonnet and bumper and a few pillars. I got some serie 500 berobase ended up ringing around after i purchased the paint, and another company was selling an autothane mix of it for like $70-$90 per litre ... bugger ! but i don't think it was a base coat type quality but they said it wouldn't matter provided i got the under coat sorted. mynbmr 225 Report post Posted August 26, 2017 The trick is build the paint up in many thin layers than in a couple layers

The paint job on a bit of it is definitely botch - clear is ok ish - but the primer / base coat is lifting off areas ! and some serious cracks forming. Aparently the car was in a crash before i bought it - and there was a bit of a re-spray, but probably not the best of jobs!
325_driver 422 Report post Posted September 5, 2017 Sanding back that bumper is a ####! It's coming off the car when i get to the work shop
325_driver 422 Report post Posted September 15, 2017 Prangs on the bumper take ages to rebuild a nice smooth curve, what a nightmare ! On closer inspection the person who did the paint job on the car before I got it must have done a sh*t job, paint is peeling crowe footing it everywhere. It begun as just bumper and C panel now progressing towards + bonet and boot / rear end of the car. Might as well do the whole car!

325_driver 422 Report post Posted September 16, 2017 (edited) Lol ... bumper is a SON OF A B# especially having to rebuild some edges from a prang, did some old soldering iron plastic welding, that was quite an experience. Now have to sand back the entire rear end of the vehicle + bonnet. Might post some photos of some more progress - it is quite a mission, so worth keeping for memory. I think this is the last time in my life i ever do a bumper. Have to do some panel fades / blending too as i dont want to do the entire rear panels as some of the paint is mint, just the last half of it looks like where some repairs were a while ago and is peeling big time. 325_driver 422 Report post Posted September 19, 2017 Looks like the bonnet has has a fair share of resprays ... 6 different layers under the clear coat!!
