Gabe79 410 Report post Posted October 12, 2017 (edited) It’ll certainly be cheaper to get a new steering wheel, but worse case and you really like the car... you can decommission the airbag and get a lvvt cert for it. Mad_Max 231 Report post Posted October 12, 2017 Have you got anyone nearby who specialises in electronics? Most places that do electronics repairs will probably be able to at least diagnose it, if not fix any blown components. If you can ID the blown component I'd be happy to swap it out for you if no one else can. If not, I'm sure there will be spares somewhere.
M3AN 4016 Report post Posted October 12, 2017 I have a couple of old steering wheels and airbags, what does your look like? Note sure mine are 1990 old but there might be something in there for you.

Yes that's the one do you know if the control module is still ok? I have been to the local Auto electrician he located a steering wheel when it arrived it is the wrong one, have been thinking about getting the car certified to operate with out an Airbag has anyone done this and how much hassle is it? aja540i 1906 Report post Posted November 1, 2017 (edited) I took my original wheel out and use a non airbag msport wheel, not an issue at wof time because it doesnt have an airbag light anymore, I got this wheel as a spare but have never tested it. I might have the original control board from the one that stopped working if you know someone that can fix it. robertw 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2017 The control board for this one is in the steering wheel with the airbag mine is toast, are the Msport wheels hard to find? I have been looking for a few weeks and can only find them off shore at silly prices, I would be interested in yours if it is working ok, Cheers Robert. I have been looking into removing the airbag and getting it certified seems like the best way to fix the problem, I have the info from LVV but it doesn't make sense, have you gone through the process? The closest certifier doesn't know much about it, Cheers Robert.

If your local person doesn't know, call around. There is a whole list of them on the page. I've seen the link, but don't have it now. If you can't find it, I'll look for you later. robertw 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2017 Thanks I have the whole document saved, I will ring around there is a certifier in Taupo he could be more helpful, I though it was sorted my Auto electrician though he had scored a steering wheel turn out it was the wrong one not a happy chap Cheers
aja540i 1906 Report post Posted November 1, 2017 I didnt bother with certifying as the airbag was optional in these cars and removing the steering wheel removes the entire system. The rules mainly relate to removing labelling so that no one thinks they have airbags when the system has been deactivated. I have had mine out for several years and never had an issue with WOFs. hotwire 352 Report post Posted November 1, 2017 (edited) Yep as Andrew says - in this case removing the wheel removes the entire system. Edit: & no one will be any the wiser. Have researched this for jobs at work. After a certain age (15 yrs comes to mind but not sure) the system can be removed but ALL related components must be removed, airbag signage removed & a sign on the dash indicating the system is no longer installed - that is the ugly part. robertw 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2017 Yeah I have all that info from the LVV website, I will have a chat with the place I get my WOF from see want they will accept, Thanks Guys
hotwire 352 Report post Posted November 2, 2017 In the case of this one - if you don't want to fix it then just swap with a non bag wheel & say nothing. There is nothing else on the car to suggest it originally had one fitted.
