Manual Conversions???

Recommended Posts

Hello, i'm new here and don't know much about BMW (i'm a honda person  ) i have been looking at either selling my car and buying a BMW or swapping my car for one.

The problem is that i like manuals and it seems that all the BMW's i look at are auto. i'm looking around the year 1991 to 1996 and it's gt to be a 4dr sedan.

my question is, obviously it depends on which car i get with which motor but generally speaking is it possible to do a manual conversion on most of or all the BMW's of those years?

Sorry for such a general question but i can't narrow it down untill i find the car i want...

Cheers

Damian

ps: i did a search and didn't really find what i was after.

its easy and parts are easy to find for the older model e30 (late 80's) but the problem with the later models (e36/e39 etc) is that parts are extremely hard to find. you would need more than just the manual box. however there are some around.....i know of a few 328i that are 5 spd

its just sic in disguise... we all know your a secret bmw lover.

With regard to your question, yeah its gonna be near impossible to find a manual conversion for a E36, your best bet is to start ringing around the wreckers and asking what it would cost including labour. SDeuropean in Hamilton have a good range of parts and I know about 2 weeks ago they were advertising a few E36 manual gearbox conversion kits. But then again they want $2000+GST for an E30 one so much be charging oodles for an E36'er.

Buy an E30 if that tickles your fancy, and if it isnt a manual, someone will have a conversion kit handy for you on these forums (I've got one for a M20 engine which should fit a 320 - 325 and maybe a 323)

Cheers for the great info, yeah i know there is alot more to manual conversions the just the gear box, i was more just wanting to know if it was possible to do swaps on these cars which as everybody has said is possible but perhaps with a price. Also labour wouldn't be to big of a deal as my mums partner is a mechanic and my uncle is an engine rebuilder so that shouldn't be a problem.

and i'm not to sure what *sic is on about either :drunk:

looks good, seat covers??

pod wont do jack unless you get a shield for it.

better to have a standard panel if there is no shielding.

318 power!

im sure the whores around here have either looked at it already or know what to look for

yeah for one i would locate the pod under the bumper with some 3" pipe and silicone joiners and the seat covers would be out of there.

They have one advertised on TM just now.

SD European RRP e36 man conv. incl. labour $3750+GST.

On this auction they say they're gonna let it go and see what it comes to. In the Q & A they're talking rough quote of $2000+GST.

And if that sounds cheap - they're using mostly secondhand parts and they keep all the auto stuff they take off your vehicle.
