E34 525i Touring 1992 oil leak from self-leveling suspension

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I own a 1992 525i (E34) Touring for 27 years.

Recently it has been leaking a lot of oil from the rear self-leveling suspension.

Can anyone recommend a good, honest, good priced place to get it fixed cause I am on a tight budget and can't go to a dealer!

I also have a rear trunk door lock that no longer works would love to get that fixed too.

I am based on the North Shore in Auckland.

Thanks heaps and look forward to your advice and replies

Try Bavarian motors, on the shore and the owner had / has one of these as a daily. Note, fixing the SLS will be expensive, most people end up swapping it for standard struts and springs.

Thanks your for advice Andrew! I've been to Ernst and his team at Bavarian before! Going to bring my car in next week! I think Ernst's has replaced his suspension on his own suspension to standard struts - might be a good long term option cause its been giving me lots of trouble!

I have little direct e34 experience, so take this with a grain of salt, and investigate widely.

Many BMWs have (common) locking issues - eg e46 door locks... you revert to key operation, and then the barrel craps out as they're not designed to be worked by key all the time.

e36 touring, e46 touring, e39 touring, e60 sedan boot... all suffer from wiring issues between body and tailgate or boot lid, leading to the symptoms you mention.

I'd suggest a BMW specialist to resolve your e34 touring woes; someone who knows where to look and how to resolve, will save you time.  You'll want to get this done soon, lest your lock barrel malfuntions too.

Some of the Auckland crew should be along shortly to recommend!

Hope that helps.
