From experience of a UK import:

you will need to set your profile address to an address in Japan, then it will allow you to add the vehicle to the mybmw app.

it will also depend if the modem in your Japan vehicle has a roaming capable sim. - ie it will still connect to the internet via NZs cell network..

it is not possible to change the “country of origin” of the car.

let me know if it works- I’m interested to see if a jap sim will roam..

Hi there. I’ve just bought a Japanese import 225XE.

I can’t add my VIN to the app and customer service says I’ll never be able to.

I’d like to try registering in Japan but not sure how or where to go to do this.

Can anyone help please.

I’m in the UK.

Thanks

I just went through this. Had the same issue of not being able to add a Japanese import car to My BMW (the app would say "not able due to technical reason, call customer service" and customer service said it wouldn't work). In your My BMW profile set your country/language to JP - English then the car can be added. Mad... but it worked.

Interesting, I have a NZ new M2 Comp and I live in NZ and registered my BMW ID with that address. I could not add my VIN for a "technical reason". Contacted BMW customer service and they said it was a language mismatch between my profile and vehicle so that's also a factor to look at, here are the instructions they sent me that worked:

Quote

Upon reviewing your account ([email protected]), we have confirmed that it is registered under the United Kingdom market. To address the issue, please follow the steps outlined below.

To change localisation of the account:

Log in to the My BMW app
Tap the profile icon located at the bottom right of the screen
Tap the gear icon in the top right corner
    Select "Account Data"
    Tap "Localisation"
Choose "NZ - English" as the preferred localisation
    Save the changes

This adjustment will update your account’s country localisation to New Zealand with English language settings. We recommend you to wait for 24 hours for the changes to reflect. Then, proceed with linking the app to your vehicle by following these steps:

I didn't have to wait 24h, more like 24m.

This may not help at all but it does indicate that there's more to it than country of origin and the vehicle's physical location. Perhaps set everything (including a fake address and language/locale) to the country of origin and you might be able to register it and then change the language back. Seems to align with @Bimmercrew's experience.

This type of DRM is BS, entitlement should follow the physical vehicle.

Edit: I went through this literally last week, so it's current.
