So yeah just chuck in your 2 cents about brands and types any optional features worthwhile getting e.g auto window roll up etc Oh yeah and what ones make normal siren sounds not those stupid sirens that go through a sequence of 5 different sounds, makes it sound like a demo car for car alarms. haha cheers Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Nobimmer 694 Report post Posted November 28, 2006 If you are like me and are gumbi,dont get one with a auto door lock after a minute or 2...even with key in ignition and car running if you get out and close the door it locks after a while...found out the hard way lol. hotwire 352 Report post Posted November 28, 2006 Quite a few good alarms out there, personally I would stick with Mongoose or Dynatron - both have good reliabilty & good back up - a lot of others dont. Remember that ANY alarm is only as good as the install & there are a lot of cowboys out there - believe me - I have seen it all. Check NZ Security Association website - automotive security - they have a list of "standards approved" alarms & their star rating, 1 being least & 5 highest, also a list of approved installers ( I am one) in each area. Yeah I know all about the bad installers so many of my mates have got alarms and requested features to be installed and never got done or done right at least. I read in AA Magazine that there were moves to make it illegal, because, as you hinted, its a very dangerous feature and there have , according to the article, been several deaths associated with it. m325i 705 Report post Posted November 28, 2006 i have a mongoose, its ok. I have been a fan of unidens TBO. The alarm in my old car, "security one" was basic as, but did the job. I hate it on my Mongoose how it automatically imobilises after a little while of 'nothing' You unlock the car, muck around abit inside then you have to unset the alrm again! MADBMA 0 Report post Posted November 28, 2006 dont do uniden, been told by some dodgy friends that there easy to bypass, they also told me that dynatron is the hardest and takes about 4-5 hours to bypass, but having said that i have a dynatron but it wasnt installed very well and i could bypass it in less the 20 mins, the trick is not what alarm you buy but how you install it, a good way to install it would be change all coulored wires from your ingnition to black maybe with numbers on them so you know what they do, then have the alarm module hidden so far into the dash that the hole dash would have to be removed, like up behind the insturment cluster or get creative and throw it somewhere completely unthinkablke eg under backseat, then all the wires from that to be black also. i dont think it matters to much what alartm system you get depends more on how you instal it, as i said i have a dynatron i can bypass in 20 mins. lidistick 70 Report post Posted November 28, 2006 I've used a Stealshield, Uniden, Dynatron and AVS. I'm currently using a Dynatron 7600 4 star alarm. Installed at Mobile Alarm specialist in Hamilton and they did a FANTASTIC install. You'd have to strip the car to find the unit. Anyway, Stay away from the Uniden and the Stealshield. The Uniden was too sensitive and used to go off when trucks rumble through or if the neighbour slammed his car door! And this was after the sensitivity being turned down real low. The Stealshield was loud and was quite annoying if you started the car after it immobilised as that set off the alarm (like right after you've jumped in the car after pumping some petrol!). The range of the remote was quite useless as you had to stand right next to the wing mirror. The Dynatron is very good. I got them to turn off the chirps and it just locks now with the lights flashing. No chirps = no guess as to what is installed. Also immobilises after 30 seconds but it has a sensor that detects the remote so when you start the car, it de-immobilises immediately and off you go. No need to hit the button again. AVS S4; good install. 2x attempted break-ins on Wakefield St Auckland and all they got was broken glass. This was my Accord. No auto-magic de-immobiliser however that's why I opted for the Dynatron. bimmer boy 21 Report post Posted November 29, 2006 Okay cheers, form what I've heard Dynatron seems like the go, Ive always liked it anyway, and the idea of turning of alarm arm and disarm chirps is a great idea too, cant stand stupid beeping noises and things like that. What features and optional ad ons would you Dynatron people recomend I wonder if you can get a dynatron with amber coloured warning LED rather than those rediculously bright blue ones that light up the entire interior at night to reveal what you have inside Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

SKT174 1 Report post Posted November 30, 2006 Bit of advice ... If you have nice wheels, tilt sensor + 3-4 differnt brand lock nuts is a must. If you have amps and subs, 120db sirens in the boot is good too. If possible - Install at least two 120db sirens inside the cabin (drives thieving pricks out of the car). Install microwave sensor (alarm will trigger again should movement detected again after initial triggered) Install extra backup battery to power your entire alarm should the thieving pricks disconnect your mains. Battery backup siren are useless as they get ripped out. Asks the installer to place external siren behind vehicle bumpers, not in engine bay where it can be seen. The harder the job you make for those thieving pricks, the better. This was my setup for my previous car. Dynatron Alarm , Glass sensor, Tilt sensor, Microwave sensor, Battery backed up (not on the siren, but the entire alarm unit), 7 sirens 2 inside cabin, 3 inside trunk, 2 outside car. I liked the Dynatron I had, it had no physical kill switch, it had a electronic chip inside my remote which it needs to start the car, very similar to BMW key. One thing I love BMWs is as m325i already mentioned, they hardly get stolen, that's why I don't have alarm on my E39. aenima 0 Report post Posted December 1, 2006 I got a mongoose 4 star alarm installed in my e36, its good apart from everytime you open a door after 30 seconds it goes off, so its a pain in the ass when your trying to work on your car, my mechanic especially hates it Also got an added battery backup siren for another $40 just for bit of extra peace of mind... I had an attempted break in in my old libero GT with the same mongoose alarm and the theives only got as far as smashing the rear quarter window n opening a door, I had about $1000 worth of cricket gear in the car at the time!!!
