Cale 36 Report post Posted February 10, 2007 Whats the differences between the M50 and M52 engines apart from M50 being built in 1990 to 1994 and the M52 being built in 1994 to 1998? Reliability issues? More or less torque (same hp though aye)?
kerrynzl 3 Report post Posted February 10, 2007 Except for USA, some UK , and SA most M52's had alloy block, and the 2.8 could only be had as a M52
my_e36 43 Report post Posted February 11, 2007 M52 has VANOS, more fuel economical and more torque at lower rev. Not sure about M52, but I read S52 (M3 EVO engine) can have stuck/faulty VANOS overseas.

Ben 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2007 I have read several times on other sites that the non vanos m50s have dual valvesprings, forged crank, Ti retainers, flash cams and the heads flow as good as M3s. Apparently they are the pick of the bunch if your building a boosted engine. Has anyone got any more info on these engines?

TronSpec 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2007 (edited) So I guess the next question is......... Can you fit a larger flowing m50 inlet manifold on to the m52 head, engine????? This would be good to know as it would liven up the 2.8 heaps in theory. I'm very interested to know about this as I only choose a non vanos m50 because of the fact that it's inlet manifold flows the most while the heads are similar throughout the m50 -m52's Edited March 2, 2007 by Gary

Yes you can. Some say it would need exhaust mod to suit as you've got better flow going into the engine.
