Nasty job... but a good thing to do. The E21 donor car for our spaceframe turbo has a sunroof and like most of the early ones (my 633 is the same) the sunroof cassette sweats under the skin. This is what causes them to rust out from the inside. The cassette itself is difficult to remove without making a mess of the remaining skin. There are a number of spot welds which need to be drilled out and then the welds at the back of the cassette which joint it to the roof rails, cut through. The sealer/adhesive between the cassette and the roof skin comes off easily enough. It's a good chunk of weight lost. We are still in two minds as to whether we wheel a steel patch and weld it in or trim the skin back to 50mm of the gutters, step the edge and make an alloy skin to bond in. If you can get a new roof skin, that would definitely be the easiest and cleanest way to go. A new E21 roof skin is probably not available now for our project. In the old days we would have just found a good donor roof and chopped it through the pillars and welded it on. Blocks under sills before cutting in both cases....

Spotted a couple of good looking E39s today. The anthracite grey 530i looked especially good, though the M5 looked very good (not sure if it's the same one that was for sale recently... If it is, the new owner has definitely spruced it up a bit!).

So why can't you just drive it there???

I think you'll find if you do a NZTA search, that legally, yea legally, you can drive it there Jamie, so long as you are taking the most direct route for inspection purposes. As a hint to help if need be, make sure it is 'pre-booked' there first............. Crash Services will charge ya a arm & a leg, & then bend ya over for a good time too - if ya get stuck let me know & I'll help ya out no worries........

And another thing about mucking around on tardme. My car had the 16 inch turbine mags that they were sold with new. When the lads at Victoria Street motors did my first warrant they let me know that `Ahem Jonesey...the tyres are marginal..please replace them before next warrant...or sooner. `. So I went looking on tard me for 17 inch M Sport Wheels And tyres. Found a guy in Napier selling a set with tyres that had done 5000 k`s. They were off his 540. He wanted $500 , I couldn`t believe it. A guy from Auckland was on the listing pestering the seller for free freight. I`m in the freight business so I hit `Buy now` . I figured the tyres were worth $500 When the wheels arrived at work I had a double take when I saw the BMW stamp on the inside of the wheels, I thought they may have been rep`s. They weren`t... the seller was a good guy.

Mojo...you need to pull the trigger...just go and buy, and buy, ....well a BMW 328 really...That was the start of the thread I reckon. Then let us know how you get on... I bought my NZ new e39 12 months ago off a guy in Auckland by hitting the `buy now `( $3900) button on tardme after a couple (!) of Steinies. It had 2 owners, same family . Got it down to ChCh, got it nicely sorted and now I drive a car that was $112000 new ex Jerry Clayton BMW in 1998, for around $6000 at the moment. And my local mechanic who has looked after it wants to buy it off me. These are magnificent cars, they just need to be looked after. Hit the button brother !!!!!!! Buy one...NOW !

Yeah. Its a bit gutting as I was hoping to have it done by the end of the weekend. Most of the parts were able to be shipped straight away but the pulley is about a week before they can send it. All up she's out of action for the better part of a couple of weeks. Was going to get the 22 grommets on my last order but thought I'd use the originals. Too bad they were so brittle and crumpled to bits when I tapped them out. $5 each when I rung Coombes Johnston! Oh well. Took the covers to get blasted today and will get them powder'd this week sometime as well as refaced so they are nice and flat. On of them seems to be quite warped/uneven.

Interesting. I loved the Ghosts campaign but was left disappointed with the online play (Xbox 360).

Well yes, I like this logic, it makes lots of sense, & I'm sure it'll bite me on the a$$ one day when I look at replacing what I've got, although to be fair, I'm hopeful my next car will be a E39 M5........ It'll still be slower than a 328, but I think my people will be able to slum it & just accept that............ Umm, I think the original topic was the gestation period of a Ethiopian fruit fly while its being driven seductively through a tropical area during mild weather in a 318 auto........but I'm happy to be corrected if that's wrong......

I'd go with the gold personally. Always thought the gold BBS looked really good on a white E30
