  1. Engine oil should be 5W40 Full synthetic

Trans either G3 full synthetic or longlife...depending what transmission it has..see my previous thread for suggestions when doing a trans service

Thanks Glenn, sorry to be a pain, is there a brand of 5W40 you would recommend, I understand some don't meet the BMW spec LL01 or is it LL03. Also how do you determine which transmission it is and how does this influence which oil?

  2. Hi, my little run-around E30 which I've had for the last 15 years is starting suffer from old age, problems are fogging up all the time and wet carpets front passenger and boot. So must be some leaks somewhere and probably a few blocked vents so air not getting in, any hints or thoughts ?

PS anyone parting out some decent carpet for this 4 door.

  3. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced Synthetic OIL for a 1999 E39 540 with 110,000 on the clock that meets with the BMW specifications. Also any price info and where it is sold if you know.

Also looking at replacing the Auto tranny oil to see if it makes the changes a bit more crisper and smoother so any recommendations on what to use here will also be most appreciated.

  4. I have had this car for 13 years and love it too death, dark green 1986 E30 320i, but it is looking and feeling a bit old specially in comparison to driving my 1999 E39 540, but as I said it's got some history with us so is deserved of some TLC.

It is a bit wallowy (all over the place) in the suspension and steering so any recommendation in this area too remedy this that won't break the bank will be appreciated.

Also can anyone recommend a good panelbeater/paintshop in Wellington to check out and remove some rust, panel beating on a few small dents and do a reasonably priced paintjob.

    Regards Huttey

  5. Does anyone know how to tell what suspension a 1999 E39 540 has, my car is a Jap import and has some sports package bit and peices - Black around the windows, heated sports seats, 3 spoke M steering wheel, 17" wheels but can't tell whether it has sports suspension or any other bits and pieces. Can anyone help ?

Also does anyone know if you can get a build sheet for Jap import through BMW NZ ?

  6. Not too hard but not too cheap either, it depends on whether you want MK3 (CD slow) or MK4 (DVD fast) GPS, you need to search ebay for these GPS units that they are willing ship to NZ and if you have the money you may as well do the radio at the same time. There is a bit of rewiring, Jochen can give you the run down or search for his post on this. CD of NZ maps, you can probably get a copy cheap or pay some exhorbitant price for a genuine one.

    Regards Pete

  7. Well I'm buggered.

I disconnected the loom at the ABS and reconnected it, nothing had changed other than when I put my foot on the break the DBC light went out. So upstairs for a cup of tea as you do, a couple of hours later went to pick up my daughter and everything is back where it belongs, no lights showing up and the speedo is working again. Very confusing, I will get the codes read to see what the great computer thinks happened.

Thanks for the help team, I learn't a bit and have some good advise for when I get new rotors and pads.

    Regards Pete

  8. I'm picking this is the E39 ??

If all those indicator lights are coming on, its not only pads and rotors

ABS pump is faulty by the sounds of it. You need to get it scanned.

Disconnect the ABS pump wiring harness. Start the car and see if everything else works normally.

The ABS pump is the first link in the canbus system and will effect other controls when it is faulty.

The circuit boards crack in the control unit on the pump

We use Rob at Power Stop Engineering in Tauranga to do our pumps

    Hope that helps

    Or call me (09) 2722546 or 021921377

    Cheers

    Glenn

THanks Glen, yes 1999 E39 540, I'm not very technically minded but I'll attempt to do what you suggest, are you able to advise where the ABS pump wiring harness is?

    Regards Pete
