  1. With staggered wheels its common to experience whats called 'tramlining' and by the sounds of it thats what your getting. Slightly unnerving when it happens the first couple of times, but there is nothing you can do about it other than change to the same tyre size all around. As for the tyres it all depends what you want out of them. Try a search, there are plenty of threads on tyres in here

  4. Paul, Yes fronts and the same time, they are the same tyre too. Both are at 4mm. Thats about (or just under) half. No undue wear on the insides as you would expect on the e32/e34. Sam, We are surrounded by chip road around here, so perhaps thats it. Bimmerboy, Dont know if its soft, but it is very quiet and a very good ride. Jazz, Id expect two aswell, which was why I was surprised to see them already at 1mm

  6. Maybe its not that bad after all, I was just expecting closer to 20k kms rather than under 14k. I cant rotate front to rear Oscar cause they are staggered, 235 on the front 255 on the rear. Maybe it was only 15 metres then
  7. Pressures and alignment all good, lots of up and down hills (it is Wellington after all). I dont hang about when I drive but I dont have the traction control off very much either. Im just surprised that they have only lasted that long.
  8. Its bearly run in mate....these will do over 500 if looked after.
  9. In 18 months Ive gone through a set of Dunlop Sport SP01's and done less than 9000 miles (less than 15000 kms) in them. That to me sounds a little rough, anyone have an idea on how many miles I should be expecting out of a set of tyres. Ive only done two 20 metre burnouts in these too

  14. Right, got a chance to have a go at this today. Thanks for the info Will, it was excellent. First off started the car to see where the noise was coming from.....nothing. No rattle no nothing. So decided to check out the cambelt anyway and had some fun getting all the covers off etc, but finally managed it to find the cam belt in what would appear to be excellent condition. Not that Ive seen another one before but it was tight, no cracks, and had all its teeth. The only problem was that screws at the top had some kind of washer on them. It was like a 'filler' to stop the two pieces from fitting together too tightly. Anyway as we were putting it all back together one of them fell out and dropped to somewhere we couldnt see. It definately wasnt on the floor or any cross members or anything so we thought it had gone behind the belt A quick trip to Repco for a magnet on an extendible arm but even with that we couldnt find it ! We decided to put it all back together and hope for the best. She started up first time and as before no noise. I took it for a drive and slowly the noise came back but not as bad as before. Its definately not at the front of the engine and gets louder and faster as the revs go up. It comfortably went over 3000 revs this time and seemed ok. What I noticed was that the noise was present when idling (although pretty quiet) and went away all together with the clutch in when driving. It sounded like someone flicking through a pack of cards. What I also noticed was the dizzy was knackered, as was the rotor arm, could that have anything to do with it ?
  15. Cracking idea Cain.When I think back to getting my licence after only having 6 lessons in a car and having driven around the only 'route' the testers took for 45 mins its scary. Never mind having a 'mini' licence to keep you off the road as peak accident times, make driver training compulsory and teach kids (because thats what you are at that age) to handle a car properly. Its far too easy here. 3Pedals, I hadnt properly considered an 'un-square' hit, your quite right. Youve obviously seen your fair share of accidents. Anyway, I was particularly interested in what people thought of the programme rather than the rights or wrongs of SUV's
  16. I totally disagree....no surprise I guess I dont believe the weight of the car is the problem, its the height of the 4x4 combined with the weight. A 7's main thrust in a crash is going to be at the same height as any other car and therefore be consumed by the crumple zones and/or side intrusion bars whereas a Prado for example is way above the shoulder line of a car and has only glass to pass through before collecting any occupants. I had one stop next to me the other day and it completely dwarfed the 7. Its shoulder line was above even the roof of the 7 and in a smash it would steam roller right over the top of me.
  17. I can recommend this seller too. A mate got some lights but ended up ordering the wrong set. He swapped them no questions asked and was really helpful along the way. As for fitting, Id say an absolute beginner with no experience should be able to fit them in under an hour....they really are that simple. Although I have only done e30's, e32's and e38's Im guessing the e46's are the same.
  18. Unfortunately I only got to see a small part of it, but from what I did see I noticed the following. I was surprised at just how biased it was. I know I shouldnt have been but I almost found myself argueing in favour of 4x4's ! The stats were all American and with absolutely no qualification. What I mean is '56% of all crashes were because of blah'.....well 56% of what ? ALL crashes in the US, a particular state, Sunday afternoon outside the local burger bar, what ? The crash test scenes they showed were all huge American 4x4's which are an awful lot bigger than the ones sold here. But the overall part for us was a tiny piece that I almost missed but my wife pointed out. There was a short clip of how a young fella wasnt enjoying driving a Prado and having trouble parking it. They then jumped to a young woman who just lamped the thing up the curb and that was it, out she got and she walked away even though she had just blocked someone else in. She went on to say how she loved the big wheels and how she could jump over kerbs when she wanted etc. My wife made the comment that, its not so much the vehicle thats the problem but the drivers attitude once they get into one. They 'do' because they 'can'. Never mind anyone else, Im ok and you can get stuffed. We see it all the time in the Wellington hills. If a car is over the center line in the road (whether they need to be or not) 9 times out of 10 its a 4x4 and its that arrogance more than anything that really winds her up. Had to switch it off when one guy said if we removed 4x4's we'd haev to remove 7 series and Mercs and Bentleys because they were just as heavy !

    I swear Ive seen that car in Wellington. Its nice but RHD ? I assume that means its been butchered with 325 parts which surely drops its value massively.

If you guys want to start a new thread about how bad/dangerous SUV's are then go ahead. Ive said my piece about them a million times but I dont need it here.
  24. Thanks Will looks good. Numpty question time.... 1. Cambelt and timing belt are the same thing ? 2. Is there a cambelt cover that I can just remove to see what state it is in, or does it require removal of items that mean the car cant run until its all put back together with gaskets and stuff ? Can you tell Im a beginner ?
