Had a customer quite a few years ago, traded his then late 70's Mitsi Galant in for a brand new Lada Sonata (or whatever they were called). Thing kept using oil, went back to the agents several times for this complaint. They finally pulled the engine apart & discovered - different size pistons
He had traded a perfectly good car in order to get a brand new POS. Needless to say - he wasn't happy after that - surprise surprise
-
Good point - forgot about that one. You do lose the CD changer though -if it matters
-
A bloke I work with has an '03 E39 NZ New. He has his iPod connected through one of those tape connector things, is that really the best option? I seem to remember they could be connected directly, or am I imagining things?
Has the car got TV? If so - yes - can be connected via AV inputs in video module - as per Nino car.
Without video module - don't think it's possible

Drooling!!!!! Love it
Was a thread on here a while ago discussing these.
I had one but it was the kid sister to this one - Non Turbo version but still a great car. Always have a soft spot for these cars.

Hamish, mailing you.

Pull the plugs out & check. If wet - dry or replace.
When they flood - cranking while not firing will just compound the problem - fuel still delivering but not burning.
Sometimes will not start without removing plugs. Have seen this a zillion times
If flooded - could be a fuel pressure regulator or ECU temp sender issue.
Re not running on No 5 - have you compression tested? Have you confirmed good spark at plug? Is the injector working?
-
Yeah, don't want to buy another auto.
The local wrecker/mechanic said he'd hook me up with a used pump
it's just removing the slutty transmission which is annoying.
May have missed something somewhere but was the transmission working before engine change?
-
Try beeping your horn and see what happens. When we put my M50 in we forgot a few earths and when I pushed the horn the indicators would go etc etc because everything was earthing through something else lol.
Basically if you have forgotten all the earths, it wont just be the starter that does not work!
WTF
Not disagreeing with your statement but:-
He didn't say that anything else wouldn't go & he had only changed the engine - not pulled all electrics apart.
Symptom discribed suggested to me one of the possible faults I outined in first post.
And yes - sometimes I do know what I am on about - have been in the game for a long time to have learnt.
-
Disconnect the starter from the engine and pull it away a bit, but keep it wired up and see if it turns over freely. If it goes wizzzzz then you know it's wired up properly and it's either not the correct starter, or you have a more serious problemo.
EDIT: You haven't connected up the earths? OH COME ON RICHARD lol.
Can't run the starter unattached to engine - how does it earth?
Unless you run a jumper lead from starter body to engine. This assuming the engine earth was hooked up in the first place of course
-
Looking like a thorough job being done there, progressing well, good on you
-
All M20 starters interchange - manual/auto are the same. Early (big) & late (small reduction type) interchange freely.
I have never had an issue with aligning flex plate & can't really see how you should.
Having said that - maybe it is misalighned somehow.
May be a starter fault (if you have two & one is unknown)
May be an connection fault - have you connected the engine - chassis earth?
Have you got good battery voltage/have you tried another battery or jumper leads from a known good one?
Have you got good voltage at starter?
Won't be transmission wiring related.
If all above are good - need to remove the starter to check clearances etc

can i get an agreement on the temp sensor ohm ratings?
parts list:
Temp sensor
Fuel Filter
Possibly AFM if those other two dont work
Agreed?
I expect the 3.5ish LSD to make a difference over the 4.46 open as well. if i get exactly 200kms now, (calculates: 200*4.46=890/3.6=247kms ) can i expect to get 247kms when the LSD is in? or doesnt it work like that?
Temp sensor readings - as I stated. If you read my second post - all the figures compute thereabouts. It is entirely dependent on engine temperature at a specific time.
Again -As long as it comes down to around those hot readings - it is recognising a hot engine
-
Looks nice enough car. Might get a little cheaper than that. New radiator etc - may want to be wary of it having been overheated. How long has the guy had it?
-
Yep, great news & good on them for that.
You say E46's up to 01 - did they sort the problem on post 01 cars?
-
I said ish. You will find when stone cold resistance will be high 2k's. At normal operating temp will be around 250ohms
Your figures will be correct - 100C is higher than normal operating temp - hense lower reading
Also cold engine is below 30C - again - reason fo higher reading.
As long as the unit is coming down to a low reading - this won't be the problem
-
Could please expain how to check this falt ?
Resitance values - approx: 3ish k ohms at cold, 250ish ohms at operating temp. Blue two terminal temp sender. Single terminal sender is for gauge
-
Would settle with either
but I reacon the RUF on its exclusivity
-
^^^^^^ Definitely not! You were lucky to get it out in one piece, besides - you will munt the threads in the head that secure the hook
-
They are known as 6point and 12point sockets btw.
Or single hex & double hex
-
Yep, shuttles are the same.

Hey Jochen,
Am wondering if you can help. I have got a 2002 BMW 530i from Japan with the TV navigation unit (same look as the photo provided in the previous post- screen in the midle and buttons on both sides and cassette behind the electronic opening face) I have tried to reprogram the unit so it can recieve NZ radio station and have tried switching the radio off and holding the "select" button. it comes up "pres ON" and then if i try again it comes up with "pres off" have tried fiddlingwith other buttons while this message is on but nothing happens and goes back to the radio station display. Does this mean this stereo cant be reprogrammed? any help would be appreciated
Hi,
PM me with the last 7 digit chassis code & I will confirm build date - this determines what tuner is fitted.
If world tuner - I can then give you the sequence for programming your radio

Whats with the BMW wreckers yard in the background Dave?

Maybe he'll trade for Fiddy cents 2002 735LI http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/C...n-258246598.htm
with its "REALLY REALLY KMs...42000KMs..." and "Long bass which is really comfortable when u seat inside the car"
Gotta love the trouble he's taken to photograph the lighting on it

Grant & Martyn - you both will be missed in your moderation roles. I have huge respect for the jobs both of you have done on here to keep things in line. Hope you both still hang around on here.
Six appalling Euro’s.
