Alberta car = certain to be rusty

    I can't resist.

Right.... a 32 year old car with 111k kms on it.... I'm sure it's been driving in the winter..... NOT!  Also, it's very, very cold in Alberta, so cold they don't use salt on the roads, just sand, so even if it was driven it hasn't been exposed to salt.

  2. I'm not a fan of the awful different colour body kit and the adjustable suspension.  If that is the factory body kit, then it's awful because it's the wrong colour, strange.

When I ran the vin the production date came back as 1988.  Strange?  Also, we're these really made in GB?

So its around GBP35k in the UK, $68k here.

With Import Duty and GST, lets say around $80k here, landed. He wants a 50% uplift on that actual cost and thats not even a fair comparison as in the UK it had a 12x larger market, a market that likes/liked/incentivised diesels and a more affluent market. Its a hard sell in NZ on all levels.

"Yes. A very attractive price given the original cost and the cost to bring one of similar age and mileage for offshore today. Try ordering one from the Australian Alpina agent. "

Right. The "original cost" has little to do with the current cost on a rapidly depreciating asset like a car.  Given its still valuable but that pitch and price makes him look foolish/toolish. Though he only needs one buyer.

Sure, but that's not a 'Touring', don't you know a touring doubles the utility... and the price. 🤣

  4. My 2 bits.  You had it inspected, so it's your problem if it's not what you expected.  Your inspection guy should have caught these things, clearly he didn't take the time/care you expected.  Granted the seller was not exactly forthright, but when buying a car with 300,000 kms there's always going to be issues.  Also, it's only $1300... a pittance in BMW terms.  Your answered your own question in your post... suck it up, I'm afraid 🙂

I feel like a read somewhere that it was stored under a tarp somewhere damp, hence the rust.

TBH seeing what classic Porches are worth, i dont even think that it is "top dollar". Sure, it looks bad, but its all fixable, and its RHD, live rego and rare sportomatic. If i won lotto it'd be in my garage.

Agree, on the surface the price seems outlandish BUT, these cars are begin listed for $150k-$250k.  I have a hard time believing anyone is buying at this price but more then one party seems to think it's possible.  So, 50k for this car 70k for resto and you can still make 20k-50k profit... if you can sell it.

All three e36 M3's have had a recent price drop...

    https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/bmw/m3/listing/3082890008 (down 5k)

Still not sure I'd pay that much for any of those examples.

Yup, the dreamers are getting a dose of reality.  Still all overpriced by at least another 5k, but in another year or two... who knows?

One sold for that price in days last year/earlier this year. Was immaculate and had done half the kms

    Precisely!  Half the kms...

While these high kms cars can be in 'immaculate' condition, there's no denying that more kms equal more loose panels, more rattles and squeaks, etc..

  8. The problem with valuing these it there are so few and none are changing hands.  I looked on Contrails and baulked at $16k but in the end I am led to believe he refused higher offers. (no dog box BTW).

I agree with you that this is 10k overpriced, but we'll never know until it sells. 😐

Noteworthy here is this car has LESS THEN 20,000 KMS!  That adds a LOT to its value, in most circles. I'm amazed at the crazy prices put cars in NZ with 250,000+ kms, or any 'classic' car in NZ with more than 100,000kms.
