Pulled the pin and picked it up. Really excited to get my hands on it now. Spec sheet for anyone who is curious is attached. Vin decoded.pdf

Thanks 🙂 So in terms of the EGR (which seems online to cause lots of problems) what is the best plan of attack? Replace with a new part or service them? Also curious to hear what people think about the DPF in terms of replacement/costs to replace them.
-
Do you know if this is something which is being discussed as part of a WOF check?
-
Interesting stuff. Thanks mate! Curious to know if you have deleted your EGR? What about your DPF?

Thank you for the brilliant and quick response! At the same time as posting here I emailed a BMW specialist in Christchurch and he basically said exactly what you have said. I will take a look into those EGR and carbon issues that you mentioned to see what is involved if they need addressing. I would say that the car hasn't done a huge amount of long hot KMs but need to speak to the owners to see as they know the full history.

My wife and I are looking at moving back to NZ shortly and have found an E90 320D which we think might be the perfect starter car. My only real concern apart from some minor equipment details (reverse camera, only has base stereo and base seats) is that it has the N47 engine which seems to receive a LOT of online commentary about timing chain issues. From what I have read the issues are much more common on cars with poor service history; the car I am looking at has perhaps the best service history of any 320D I have ever seen. I wanted to know if anyone on here has experience with this particular engine and the liklihood of getting one that expereicnes the timing chain issues in NZ with our specific car market. I am also hoping that somebody on here has an idea of the cost involved to replace the chain, guides and tensioner etc in the event that it needs to be done as it will factor into my offer. The car I am looking at: - 2012 LCI E90 - Less than 100,000kms - NZ New - Full documented service history at a BMW authorised agent - Services have been completed annually at less than 10,000kms each time Aside from the timing chain issues, if anyone else has any comment about the E90 I would appreciate input. I was originally looking at the F30 however if the right E90 LCI came up I would be open to it as it has the newer CIC Idrive and the styling is much nicer than the pre-facelift cars in my opinion.

I have been doing a fair bit of research specifically around the timing chain issues. It seems to me that any of the cars fitted with the N47 can have it go at any time but its clear as mud as to when they improved the issues aside from the cars that are fitted with the B47. So if you buy a 320d make sure it has a service history and make sure it hasn't been serviced in line with the factory recommended intervals.

Hi all, I am toying with the idea of picking up an E46 M3 with the manual box. The idea is buy it, store it and drive it maybe three or four times a year (I live overseas) and let it appreciate. Does anyone have any recommendations for dealers I might be able to approach to put an eye out for me? Side topic - Who thinks or doesn't think that the E46 M3 will appreciate into a sought after classic?

Looking for an E36 or E46 Open to any model/combination but not interested in an E36 316i/318i unless its manual (been there, done that and been dissapointed). Based in Christchurch, let me know what you have!

Would be extremely interested if you were in Auckland. Prices are so much better in the North Island!

Not really I actually love the car. TBH its one of the best cars that I have ever owned. In terms of the way it drives with the 5 speed and the SR20. I have found another car which I think that I will move to so I will let the Nissan go.

Up for sale is my trusty Nissan Primera. I know its not a BMW but it is a damn good car and would make a safe, economical and cheap car for any young driver or for anyone looking for a daily driver. I have another car lined up that I am interested in so would like to move my current Primera on. 156,000kms 5 speed SR20DE Silver Warrant till end of year Rego till 09/14 Car is on god shape, front bumper has a small bend in it. Not from myself but it looks like a car pack accident at some stage. I can look into replacing the bumper for anyone interested. All electrics work, I had the climate unit replace when I got it (heater blows hot and aircon blows cold). Has a Sony CD head unit with aux, alpine rear speakers with pioneer front speakers (not a boy racer stereo but sounds good). Recent oil in both gearbox and engine. REG is BYF456 http://www.carjam.co.nz/car/?plate=byf456 $3500.00 Located in Christchurch.

Ok so I got the car home after a small drive. What I noticed straight away: - Cold start was difficult. Car took some cranking to go and once going needed throttle to idle around 1200rpm for 1 - 2 mins before it could sustain itself. - Engine is a little tappity, maybe an oil change or will the valves need tuning? - Thermostat is on its way out so will need to be replaced Other then that the car has a lot of character and sits damn well on the road.

I do like the M42 but by the sounds of things its quite a process to convert an M10 to an M42. Basing that on this >>> http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/index.php/Engine_Swap_-_M42 While the M20 swap from an M10 looks a lot easier >>> http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/index.php/Engine_Swap_-_M20

To do this conversion could I use the original gearbox or would I need to change that out swell? There is an M42 on trade me for $450 atm in good shape by the looks.
-
Nice, thanks for the input! I am picking it up tomorrow to borrow for the weekend so I will post back on how good it is Can't wait. I have never driven or even been in an E30 and I have had 3 BMWs.

I had the same issue and I purchased a new switch through trademe. I got great service through this guy. http://www.trademe.co.nz/members/listings.aspx?member=3293232&page=2&rptpath= -
I have a friend who purhcased a 1987 E30 coupe in red who is potentially selling it on really soon and I am quite keen on it. It is an 87' 318i with a 5 speed manual. It has the M10 engine. If so what is the M10 like? The car is quite high kms (over 200) but it generally tidy and probably quite cheap. From what I gather online, the m10 is a damn good we engine. Another question I had was roughly how heavy are the 4,cylinder e30 coupes. I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Hey guys, In the market for a new car and this one popped up last night? Looks to be in good shape and has a nice combo of the SR20DE and a 5 speed. I am in Christchurch though so I was wondering if anyone is keen to take a look at the car for me in exchange for a box of beers? www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/nissan/primera/auction-681049187.htm

HI guys, Just noticed that my 1993 E36 318i is buzzing lightly when in N or P. The noise instantly does away when put in any gear other then N or P and has no issues at all when driving. It has the GM 4 speed and the M40 engine. Any ideas?

I was surfing trademe when I found this >> http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/bmw/328i/auction-626249730.htm My questions are: 1. Does this look dodgey 2. Would you buy it if you were in the market for an E36? (If not then why?)
-
Just poking around on trademe and I am curious about something. What is the difference between the 318i with the tip-tronic option and the one without? Are they a different gearbox? Is the non-tipronic version the same found in the E36?
-
How much for both?
