Where is that, i think i spotted it under the intake manifold? I see the PCV hose is like chewing gum and the PCV valve has oil residue around it, so a new valve is on the way and I will replace the hose while im there; ive seen a couple of posts on here indicating a duff one of those can affect idle too.

Interestingly, this is my first 4 cylinder bmw, and my only (out of 4) E36 to have standard mirrors as all my previous ones had M3 mirrors (even the 323i).

From memory it hangs off the bottom of the top part of the intake manifold, it would probably be worth making sure you had a few meters of new vacuum hose before you start digging around, you will end up replacing all of them!

  2. Replaced water pump, thermostat, fan belt, coolant, vacuum pump O ring, bottom rad hose showing signs of age so will order a new one, also couldn't get correct O ring for vacuum pump, made do with an undersized one and some sealant, will order correct one . Car actually gets up to normal temperature now!

Still had original water pump with plastic impeller, 320,000 km and no signs of failing, but better safe than sorry....

Front brake pads still bedding in but no signs of squealing so far!!

Slapping a rego plate across the middle helps break it up, but begs the question - is cooling airfow then restricted at all?

Probably not, I imagine there is a big aluminium beam in there somewhere to meet frontal impact standards and it blocks more airflow than the plate anyway.

  4. Replaced the front brake pads today, they worked fine and had plenty of life left in them but they squealed a LOT when they were hot, hoping pads will sort it, if not it will get new rotors as well.

Also got a new water pump, thermostat and coolant to go in so thats my holiday job .

Thanks for the input - I didn't know that Supercheap sold 10w60 Supercar, I thought they only sold EDGE as I've never seen it advertised that I can think of. @aja540i totally agree on the oil change frequency, who do you use for the oil analysis? @BM WORLD Thanks, I'll touch base in the near future and grab a couple of containers.

I use Gough, they have a branch just around the road from work but all the testing is done in Christchurch I believe, you buy the kit from them and drop it back to them, they send it to the lab and email the results.
