Hello Ladies and Gentlemen. I'm just posting out of interest, my 318Ti with M50 engine and Manual conversion. My passion has gone from my little bastard-child project car that I spent many hours obsessing over, ultimately ending in what I have today. My plans were originally to take the M50 + turbo route, but plans have changed, and I'll be looking at purchasing another car by the end of the year. I completed the conversion November last year, used the car basically every day to head around town, into the city, and took it for a couple of drives to Masterton and Palmerston North from Welly. The engine never skipped a beat, and the manual box and clutch seem sound, it doesn't seem to burn oil and doesn't use water . I purchased the engine and gearbox out of a wrecked 325iS from Auckland. The engine was a bit rough and worse for wear (head gasket was fine, had just not been looked after), so I decided to take it all apart, give it some new gaskets, clean everything up, and put her back together. Now, it was my first time dismantling an engine, so it's definitely not perfect, but I think I did a pretty good job considering The GOOD: -Warrant and Reg until the end of the year (Nov reg, Dec WOF) (although hasn't got a cert. If you want to get one, everything was OEM so shouldn't be too hard with some driveshaft hoops) -Brand new front brake pads -Bosch Ellipsoid headlights (so much better than the horrible ones previous) - also have changed to clear indicators. - replaced the horrible steering wheel with an Mtec wheel + airbag - 17 inch wheels, a wee bit of curbing, brand new tyres all round. - full black leather interior (a wee bit of cracking, as to be expected, but looks nice after a clean.) - relatively clean carpets, etc - heated seats (driver side doesn't work amazingly, but sit in the passenger seat and you feel like you've peed your pants!) - it has an armrest centre console - oh yeah, it has an M50 engine, and a manual box -3.45 e30 Diff w/318Ti output flanges. Drips a wee bit, but has new oil in it and seems to be fine (purchased off a Bimmersport member) (it was almost un-drivable with the 4.44 auto diff ) The not so GOOD: -no aircon (removed entirely) -It isn't the tidiest from the exterior, a few bumps and scratches on the passenger side (pre my ownership) and a bit of a scratched rear bumper (due to some idiot in a Silvia not knowing how to stop at a pedestrian crossing, and me being too nice), and a hole in the front bumper from my partner's sister inserting her tow bar into it (not too massive), but can chuck in an average condition Motorsport bumper (in white) if you were interested in repainting. -A wee bit of clear coat is coming off the front, and some paint chips indicate red paint underneath? -No Cert for the engine/gearbox conversion, but managed to get a WOF no problems, failed on Tyres (all new), headlights (couldn't adjust beams so changed to ellipsoids), wiper blades. -Speedo reads over, due to leaving the 4cyl gauge. -The battery is in the boot (yay), but is only fastened with rope at this stage to a pillar (does the trick) -Driver side door card of course has a bit of issue, stays on fine, but the top trim is peeling of the retainers so it wobbles a bit, all the rest are wonderful -Power steering tends to have a bit of a whine when it gets warm, have a spare PS pump at home so can chuck that in too. -When I relocated the battery to the rear, the hole in the firewall where the battery cable comes through isn't fully sealed. I was going to expanding-foam the hole up but never got around to it. -Passenger electric window goes up and down, but only in segments at a time so you have to stab the button a wee bit -Check-oil tube isn't fastened to the engine (don't know why it didn't come with the stem that attaches it), so you have to hold it when you pull the dipstick out -Reverse lights are disconnected (believe all it needs is a new reverse switch on the trans) -Sunroof works, but carpet is peeling off -A wee bit of a squeak coming from somewhere, and usually in reverse. Maybe a wheel bearing or something but haven't checked out in detail. I'm not asking for much, the car cost me $3200 when I purchased it 2 years ago, the wrecked 325is cost me $2000, and I spent a good $1000+ on all new gaskets, etc, and countless hours, blood and sweat haha. So realistically, I'm not expecting to 'make' any money on the car, but let me know what's realistic Feel free to come and view. I work from home so am around most of the time. I am in Lower Hutt (Wellington) Here are a few pictures, including the dents and scratches Have a great week Bimmersporters! I will upload a few new pictures if/when the rain/hail calms down a bit. Nick

Hi all, I was just wanting to get an idea of how much this would go for. Please let me know if this is the wrong area to post in. I have a 1997 318Ti, and last year I purchased a 325is, put new gaskets and piston rings in her, and transplanted it into the Ti along with the 325 manual trans. I ran it in properly, running the recommended oil, and from day 1 I haven't had any problems with the engine, bar a squeaky fan belt which I will replace before sale. It currently doesn't have a warrant, or a cert for the engine, and while I'm not familiar with the certification guidelines, I don't suspect it will need too much for a warrant. Things that will need to be done are 2 new rear tyres, the reverse lights have been disconnected (faulty reverse switch in manual box, don't need them for warrant though). It has black leather interior, an M-spec airbag steering wheel, and 17" wheels. The exterior is relatively tidy, it has some scratches on the rear bumper where someone bumped into me, and a dent in the passenger door and front bumper. I can put some pictures up if people are interested. Definitely far from perfect, but I think I did a pretty good job at it. I was just wanting a rough estimate. I'm not needing to sell, my passion has just gone from the little beast and want to move onto something bigger and better Here is the build thread: http://bimmersport.co.nz/topic/46528-m50-swap-into-318ti-future-turbo-project/

Am located in Lower Hutt, Wellington. ----SOLD---- 1. E46 330i front brake callipers, carriers and spring clips. I originally purchased these off Brent for my 318Ti M50 swap, but have decided to head down another route with the brake side of things I bought them around 6 months ago, and haven't touched them minus having a look at them. Got them for $350, listed on trade me for $350 buy now $400 but will give to you guys for $315. 2. E36 318Ti Auto gearbox. Never gave me any problems, and had around 170,000km's when I removed it during my M50 swap. Comes with a worn guibo and first segment of driveshaft if you want them (otherwise I'll just chuck 'em). On trade me for $220 buy now $275 but will do for you guys for $200. ----SOLD---- 3. Radiator out of my Ti. Great condition, never overheated, and has the thermostat and electric fan. Good replacement for a broken one + I believe the fan can be removed to be used on cars with clutch-type fans. On trade me for $100 buy now $125. Will do for you guys for $90. 4. 318Ti ABS Pump unit. Never gave me any issues or problems, and definitely worked well. On trade me for $100 buy now $110 but will do for you guys for $75 5. E36 Coupe taillights. A pair of clear and red rear lights. Both in great condition with most of the bulbs (think it's missing one?). On trade me for $75 buy now $90 but will do for you guys for $65 for the pair. 6. E36 Coupe dark navy leather seats. Relatively good condition pair of front seats. Full dark navy leather. No tears in the material. Has the typical leather cracking, etc, but would look great with some love and care. On trade me for $160 buy now $185, will do $150 for the pair for you guys. 7. 318Ti Alternator. Good working condition. Again only removed due to my engine conversion. Never had any problems! On trade me for $55 buy now $75 but will do for you guys for $50. 8. Front right E36 Coupe bosch headlight. The left one was broken so just selling the one. In great condition, could do with a bit of cleaning of the glass, and comes with all the bulbs and covers. 9. 318Ti air con compressor. Was in good nick on removal, and my air con system always blew cold air. On trade me for $75 buy now $90 but will do for $65 for you guys. Any questions just ask Cheers.

Hahahaha e30ftw. #YOLO love it. thanks again gents.

I guess you're right there I want to head down the turbo route and I just really like the coupe shape over the Ti... It's probably just how it looks at the moment. I'd probably get the fire back when it's painted, new wheels, sitting nicer... I've just gone off the shape lately for some reason. Turbo m50Ti... I guess that would be different which makes it cool.
-
Thanks Jason. If I was planning on holding onto the car for any longer than the next few months I wouldn't even be considering not getting a cert. I guess I will see how it goes. A couple of things to fix up before WOF (due soon).
-
ANY increase? So you could put on a nice cold air intake or some good quality headers and need a cert these days? Lol
-
Thanks for your insightful and helpful comments gents The only reason I was wondering is it would be quite nice to get off this warrant. In the next 6 months I would like to pick up a coupe and change the engine into that. Would be silly to go through the cert process if I just want to part the car in 6 months time? It's all done nicely. All stock so relatively inconspicuous (apart from the growl at pedal to the floor instead of the pitiful gasp of the m44 haha). Just need to relocate the battery in the boot so I can get the spare wheel back in. Maybe one of those slimline batteries. Cheers gentlemen.

Hi all. I was browsing the certification website a while ago and came to the conclusion that I would need to get my car certified before it would get a warrant. It's had m50 instalment and manual swap, all done OEM with no modification to any mounts, brackets, etc. I was under the assumption that it need certification; however I was talking to a friend today who put a m50 in his e30 316 and goes through warrants with no trouble at all. What is actually required, and thanks in advance. Nick
