  1. I Agree with Martyyn.

Thats some car, Far too good to see the rape and pillage of a parts car.

Be interesting to try the way of LVVTA.

Modify the car in some way so as to apply for a Low Volume Vechical certification.

I Believe that there are ways around the Paper work if you know the rules and how to make them work for you. After all if the car was sold here new it would not have the problem of frontal impact. Am sure that if the car is altered ( and could be returned at a later date) then it is subject to Certification, and then signed on to the road by a Scruitineer, Worth thinking about...............................

    And Bloody Tempting.

  2. Have another e30 that is due to be dismantled.

Manual Gear box and drive line gone.

Most Body parts, motor, windows, lights and fittings are still there.

PM me and will sell bits off it.

No Boby kit, except a small factory spoiler, and front lip with the air ducting on it.

Pre Face lift for those that are interested.

  3. O K, my 2 cents.

    Have Owned e30,( 4 ) e36 ( 1 ) e46 ( 1 ).

e30 on the whole Very reliable, reasonable cost for most parts, easy to service. Most parts are available and if not in NZ, can be got within 14 days. Service parts that are used on a regular time frame (oil , air filters ) are not expensive and I use only the Genuine parts. Have had 318i m done 70k when purchased, now has more than 175k onit and is in the family still. Been driven hard and basicly never let us down.

323i ( 3 ) first one 1983. Frist as road car, then race cars, apart from the saftey mods, are stock cars. Have still got one and has competed in the last two Dunlop Targas, and been mechanically total reliable.

e36 1996 318ti Is the least favorite of the 3 series that i have owned, But still was economical to service. Bought at 25k sold at 85k. total costs to own , other than oil and tyres, about $500.

If you are going to service the car yourself go with the best e30 you can find. The e36 is a more complex car, and i agree that the early ones were prone to annoying small faults that kept on happening.

My 2 cents as i see it from someone that does nearly all his own work.

  4. OK people.

Get serious, I bought a set , second hand, off trade me about 8 months ago.

The Guy selling them had no idea what they were, i dont think. The reserve was about $120.00.

I had to go to $615.00 to get them as there was stiff competition at the bidding.

These are second hand and in reasonable condition. Have talked about makeing a few sets sometime later this year. Dont have any pics of them, but are nicely made. No joins in tubes. Equal length. Believe they were made by Hartge.

No one can identify them positively yet.

So $600.00 is very cheap for new ones. I wouldn't be too keen to make for that sort of price.

    My 2 c

Watch out about importing them, Left hand drive ones dont go in.

  5. Interesting thread.

Lots of people out there that have never owned, or driven an open car of any type.

I have owned a soft top for years and would never part with it, Not BMW, but what it is does not really matter. If you like the fresh air and wind then it rates.

Napier e36 makes the comment about rollin the cabbie, Thats true. But how about all the motor bikes out there? I own a full race prepared BMW, with roll protection cage. That car was rolled over a bank at speed, and totaled with major damage to all corners. If that had been a standard e30 we may not have walked away.

Those out there that havent tried one out should. Great fun. I have had some experience with e30's and some with an e30 cabbie. The standard saloon's have had more rust in them than the 4 cabbies that i have worked on. They were more expensive than tin tops, so seem to have been better looked after.

    Just my 2 Cents.

But try before you rubbish them too much :);)

  6. Bravo,

yep there is at least one of the 333i e 30 cars in NZ, lives in Palmerston North.

was for sale a few years ago but totally over the top on price.

Very heavy at the front in steering, and under braked!

And i'm with Glen........... No 323i

have one with largly standard motor , headers but basic stock motor.

  7. What Carl says to true.

Watch out for that drive shaft mount. Did your box come out of a face lift or pre face lift??

There are differances in the mounts. There are differences in the length of the drive shaft. Though in all the casesthat i have seen or been involved in were m20 ( 6 cylinder ) motors.

    IMHO
