  1. Putting in a dif from an e30 is possible, but not a simple job. e12 5 series dif is the way to go. I'd suggest just putting in e21 parts, they can be found. It'll be far, far easier. Unless he's planning on running a lot of power??
  2. hahahahaha brilliant
  3. I'm ordering gaskets for a 731 head on a m20b20. Although the supplier doesn't know whether it's a large or small port head. I've had conflicting information from most places, so I figure I'd ask the experts..
  4. If you think you'll get a degree by putting in 4 hours a day, 4 days a week you're wrong. Or a commerce student
  5. A steam clean? I thought that was for the outside of the motor.. How would I go about doing that?
  6. Are you talking about the guy I linked you to? He's running a lexus engine, nissan dif, toyota gearbox, and the rest is custom. You'll need to upgrade your dif at least. There's a whole lot of options for that, most not expensive but time consuming. Edit - spelling
  7. 1979 320/6. Got a m20b20 in it, toning down the power as the last head cracked from it. It had a bit of rust, but easily sorted. I'd love a 323i, but never had any problems with the 320 until the head went (plus, I'm a poor uni student) If you know what you're doing they're a quick, reliable car. There were a few around a month or two ago with the motor gone and everything else good. Exactly what you're looking for.. Chuck me a PM when you see one.
  8. You'll need to change a lot more than just the engine. Finding a good e21 is a bit hard.. I've always got my eye out. Like I said, I'd ask the guys who've actually done the conversion before. I've got a feeling it's not as easy as you're thinking it's going to be.
  9. Gotta clean out all the coolant lines, due to oil + antifreeze. Not nice stuff.. Any ideas on the best way to flush it? It's still in the car, with the head off. I'm replacing all the hoses etc..
  10. Good luck with buying one. I don't see that many around, but a few dreamers on trademe every now and again. I got mine for 1200 with a spare set of mags + tyres, new tyres and far too much work done to the car. If only they didn't work it so much the head cracked Chuck me a PM when you're going to look at one. I know what to look at as I get bored and take mine apart..
  11. Disconnect the battery. Run a fused wire from the positive battery terminal to the positive amp terminal. Run a wire from a clean grounding point (connected to the main body of the car, with the metal sanded back) to the negative terminal of your amp. Connect the remote wire and RCAs from your HU to your amp. It's pretty easy.. just make sure the battery is disconnected or you'll have a nice fire or a fried HU. Never let the RCA's touch when the battery is connected. Use ring terminals, and make sure you fuse the power wire within 15cm of the battery. Any problems just ask. Just don't connect the battery with the job half done.
  12. I don't think you're going to be able to do it for less than 10k. Have a look at this topic http://www.bmwe21.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1230 He chose a lexus v8 because of the price, yet I think he's still at least 15k down from it. Ask that e21 forum about it, they're the experts.. but I don't think that you'll be able to do it for less than 10k and it'll take you a long time.. It'll fly with a recent engine in there. They fly anyway
  13. I hate napier to gisbourne, if you get stuck behind a car you're there for hours.. Tuki tuki on the other hand... Didn't know how many HB guys there was though! I'll have to take my car out when I get up and fix it.
  14. There's 8 inch subs that'll outperform most 12's What sub are you thinking of getting?
  15. 6x9's boxed have **** bass response, your money would be better spent on a HU and fronts then. With all your road noise, the closer they are to you the better. Sound insulation isn't good enough to block out all road noise from a car, especially 3kg of it. But if you're using ear plugs.. I'd even go for some jaycar splits($180RRP, although they've been known to go for far lower than that), and attach tweeters to your dash with a SQ winning combination of bluetack. The tweeters will be closer to your ears, allowing you to hear something.. I'd spend the money on getting a half decent HU, as that's what'll be powering your speakers and a bad one won't allow you to hear much at high speeds. Entry level pioneer and alpine HUs would be fine, you should be able to pick up one for under 100 off trademe. Or wait till a sale is on at repco and pick up a cheapo pioneer from there (I got a decent one for under 100 I think). Stay away from cheap and unknown brands, you'll only end up losing money on music you can't hear. I picked up rockford fosgate splits for under 100, and they're better than most splits with a RRP of under 400. Just shop around, or go for jaycar. Edit - I'd go for fronts first, but if it's not loud enough for you then chuck in some rears as you'll have another 2 channels to use.
  16. Upgrade your grounds instead of wasting your money on a cap. Your amps will have easily enough capacitors in it. Upgrade the grounds from your bat, and from your amp. 0ga or 2ga from the bat, min 4ga from your amp. If SPLers don't use caps(apart from for HU's sometimes) then you don't need to. Especially with a sony setup..
  17. Don't use 6x9 boxes, they're far too small for the speakers. Dynamat your car! One bulk pack won't make jack-all weight difference, and will cut out so much noise. If you give details about where the road-noise comes in I can help with what deadening to use and where. It won't add much weight at all.. Are you planning on adding a sub? Splits? Budget? You might even be happy with a cheap pair of coax's and a simple HU. Just shop around first and don't buy anything from repco or supercheap without research.. Oh, and don't get rears.
  18. For my lossless I just use apple lossless(too lazy to look elsewhere), I've got a big HDD so it's worth it. And anything less than CD quality is a waste with a decent setup. Edit - And ever wondered why dynamat is so popular overseas? You can still have a SQ setup at 50 kph
  19. You didn't happen to let the RCA's touch did you? Or was it just a pioneer deck..
  20. Bahaha you'd have to lower your IQ get into the beehive.
  21. I wouldn't settle for anything less than lossless. And just use cds and steal your mates music I've heard very good things about ipod + alpine, not so much about pioneer.
