Meanwhile a Nissan Tiida can drive around with its roof caved in, front guards falling off and bumper held on with masking tape without an issue. Great system, works well.

You know you're talking about two different system 🙄 Roadworthy inspection =/= modification certification

Yes, certs can be hard. Based on some of the utter shite inspectors are presented with, it needs to be. Just be thankful there is even a road to legal modifications here.

@KwS, sell it and then buy which?

Thought, If I make sure to maintain it via proper servicing once every 5K and stay on top it, it should be all right for the long haul. But I think that may not be the case here?

Anything but a 4 pot BMW. No one here is kidding when they say those engines are well known to be horrifically problematic, no matter how you look after them. BMW had some issues with engine design at that time.

  3. Or, you know, just keep an eye on your speed and dont worry about speed cameras or cops?

I've had two speeding tickets in my lifetime, and both were 100% my fault and both were due to me being stupid. Dont use a radar, dont use waze and dont even have cruise control.

    Better living everyone.

  4. Honestly, reading the Car Constructors Manual, which is what LVVTA uses, you might be pushing sh*t up hill trying to use aftermarket recaro rails in a stressed seat situation. You wouldnt need to prove the rails/seats meet the standards, you would need to prove the rails were factory fitment in a factory car as fitted by BMW.

I know my friend who did a similar thing to his corolla had to prove that the recaro rails he used were OEM toyota parts, as fitted to an OEM toyota (in this case, a Levin). This was helped by the rails having OEM toyota part numbers on them. If he changes seats to more modern recaros which have the newer bolt pattern, he has to change the rails and will need to put the buckles on the tunnel then.

Easiest solution is to mount he buckles to the tunnel with doubler plates and be done with it.

    Pops and Bangs

Nope, have none, but have had experience in a variety of cars. The most likely cause is an air leak in your exhaust, most likely the joint where the downpipe comes off the turbo. The closer to the exhaust port of the cylinder, the more likely to pop and bang. As a younger hoon, I used to deliberately make my car exhausts bang, but as a more refined gentleman :P I do prefer to fly under the radar a bit more

Since you're already running MHD, turn on the exhaust burble option. On my E91, with stock exhaust other than decat, it could pop and bang with the best of them. Its horrible for the turbos though I believe.

Thanks for the explanation, I understand now.

However, this car has been written off (according to carjam) so would it still serve this purpose?  If you put the vin on another car it would need a re-cert to be road worthy.  Hard to hid the changed vin, wouldn't it be?

AH, i didnt check the rego, so just presumed it was live. If its dead, its not even good for P&Ts (as the cool kids call it)

This homie doesn’t know what that means. Or is this sarcasm?

Someone buys/obtains a car that is dead reg/stolen/not an M3 and wants it to be a road "legal" M3... buys shell with reg, plates and vin tags, puts said identity on dodgy car.

Very illegal, but still happens. I think they call it ringing in the UK.

I want to be unambiguous here, if you are driving BELOW the speed limit for YOUR comfort, you must ABSOLUTELY (edit: safely) pull over as soon as people behind you want to pass, it is NOT your place to judge how fast or safe they are driving. Get out of the way.

Still doesnt give you the right to be a wanker and bully someone else on the road if you are behind them. Just chill out, sit back and accept the extra 2 seconds it'll take to get to where you're going.

If we were talking about doing 20 under the limit, it'd be another story, but 5-10 under in bad weather? Grow up.

If people are driving faster than you then yes, 40-45 is too slow. If you're not confident travelling at the speed limit, in any conditions, and people are driving faster than you, pull over and let them pass, even if that means you spend half your time pulling over to let others past.

That's pretty much common sense actually, I'm surprised anyone would need to ask, although I shouldn't be so surprised because it seems that whilst it's common sense, it doesn't appear to be common practice on NZ roads. In Europe you'd probably get shoved off the road if you did this, or pulled over by a cop.

Or, hear me out, remember that the posted speed limit isn't a hard target you MUST meet, drive to the conditions and bullying people on the road isn't ok.

Is averaging 40-45 kph on a 50kph road in the early hours on a rainy day with poor visibility too slow? Some dude in a ute honked at me at a roundabout then proceeded to tailgate me for a few hundred metres, drove beside me on the meridian, then dipped his front end ahead of me before turning to bugger off. Too bad my dashcam wasn't working.

Wasn't a Ranger danger, was it? Ute bros are a pest.

What problems have you had? I’ve read plenty about the usual suspects, but mine is still <80k. How many k’s is yours?

    Guessing bing bong is CEL..

The only bing bong I get sick of is the fuel gauge whining about being under 1/4 because BMW seems to think everyone who owns one lives in some vast continental mountainscape.

I got shot of it ages ago, thank god. BMW uses the same bing bong for everything; door open? BING BONG. Ignition on? BING BONG. Critical failure of the active steering, causing the steering wheel to be on a 45deg angle whilst on a twisty single lane hill road? BING BONG.

I had issues with the valve stem seals and smoking (very common, even turners knew to look out for it and refused to buy the car because of it), the active steering regularly thew its toys out of the cot, dynamic drive would sometimes throw errors, as would the engine. I think almost every time i drove it something would throw an error. I chased error after error fixing things until it kept the errors away long enough to sell it. It had about 130k on it. I took a hell of a loss selling it just to get rid of it.

I've had a few BMWs now and generally liked all of them, except that one.

Im sure not all of them are that bad, but ugh.

Why is it a shitbox? 😢

That plate looks heaps better than my example. How did you bend it?

was already bent when i got the car, suspect it was probably done in metal folder.

Its up there with one of the worst cars i've owned. Constant problems, all common, and ended up with PTSD hearing the BING BONG noise whenever i drove it. Horrible car, its no wonder people say BMWs are unreliable. It was nice to drive when it worked though 🤣

As I recall, the last time I fitted one of the standard size plates to a Jappa I just bent the last 10mm or so at each end around pretty much at right angles. Sat flat and looked OK. Never had any problem with it at WOF time.

    Cheers...

Yeah the one on my shitbox 650i was bent like that and looked 100x better than the OPs.

I wouldn't go near it without plugging in a code reader and getting the suspension looked at (it looks decidedly saggy). N54 + DCT is a nice combo though. I would say you could chop the asking price significantly depending on what codes it's throwing.

It's probably still on the adjustable suspension as per the thread I linked

  15. If you'd dug a little deeper you'd find a thread on here if it being sold previously.

It has/had a lot of good bits on it but looks like its a fair bit rougher now than it was. When it was first listed by the current owner they had only recently got it from Turners, and had a bunch of warning lights on, so I'd go into it with eyes wide open. Its a heck of a car for not much money, but it could also be an incredible amount of pain since it has the N54 and no service history.

I believe it says its a manual because its DCT, not auto.
