They use a Getrag 240 yes, But the bellhousing is different on the m40's compared to m20/m50 etc.
So Yes it will convert an m40 to manual. No it won't work any of the small 6 motors, on the 4cyl ones.
thanks man. will edit

Hi Andrew, do some more homework, that box will not work with all the options you are suggesting, ask Ray.
I have the same box in my car and thats the parts that differed to make it fit for me :S Getrag 240 is Getrag 240 isnt it? doesnt matter if it came from an M20 or an M40? will edit listing if im wrong. its listed as M40 and i doubt anyone would get it for thier M20 anyway because of the other stuff you need to get/modify

so just leave it you reckon? it doesnt leak or anything. yeah i put new seals on the LSD, was going to buy some for the 4.45 but then the LSD came up at the yard so i grabbed it. good save
Glen: outer hub flange = hub on the trailing arm? also i couldnt find the attach photo button so i uploaded them to photobucket and did it that way. how do i make them smaller? is that on your end or photobuckets end? thanks

I have a Lada touring.. its awesome to drive. if you get the oppertunity to take one for a spin i definitely recommend it! its not that underpowered really. its quite torquey. yeah it only go's 160 (ive had mine to 100 miles an hour).
Was considering dropping the M20 in once it comes out to make room for the M50/52, but its going to take a lot of work... about 10% likely haha. If anyone has a Fiat twin cam lying around though...

Might be the wrong forum but..:
Swapping my 4.45 Open diff for a 3.76 (?.. around that anyways) LSD. Ive never touched the diff and axels before so previous owners mechanic or themselves did this. the other picture shows the untouched one
Am i going to have to replace this or will it be fine? the car has driven for the last 2 years since ive had it + god knows how long and doesnt seem to act strange..
edit: btw there is a diff leak on both sides, but more so on the side the buggered axle is on but ithink thats coincedence
Edit: Please resize your photos to 800 X 600 I'll leave them here till the morning... or they are gone

Going to try this when i can...
Since we are on topic of bootlids and mounting.. What would make a boot lid wobble side to side? Should it be like that or what? It's not too bad but it does move about 1cm side to side. Can't remember if my 325i's boot was like this :S
do you have all four bolts in? that would be the most obvious reason. tighten them up as well and see what happens
-
extra weight possibly if youve added it to factory bootlid? never held a tech II spoiler so dunno if the weight would be a problem.
It probably weighs next to nothing.. its just fiberglass or plastic or something and i cant tell a difference in weight between standard with the little factory spolier and the MT2
You take both the rear torsion bars out of the boot and twist them to give them more tension in the lift position. They are made from spring steel, but over time loose there tension. There is NO adjustment
that explains it. thanks man
-
what can i adjust to make the lip pop open? my standard lid opened when you popped it, the MT2 you have to hold it open it wont stay open by itself. i cant seem to see any way to adjust the spring lever things at the back

Most of car companies sell the moulds for their old models to places like India and South America.
I hear tell you can still get a brand new xy ford falcon in Venezuela
I have a Lada touring (my thrash car/backup for when im working on the E30) so ive researched them.... the design was the Fiat 124 from the 60s or something, then sold it to Lada, and you can still buy them brand new today in Egypt
for the record, if you ever get the opportunity to drive a Lada, take it, you wont be disappointed

Are you sure? I thought on the European vehicles you could run both indicators from one side only?
sarcasm?
if not; the left and right signals are on seperate curcuits on every car. they HAVE to be. what you are probably confusing yourself with is the tails and brakes. on Japs the back the two tails are on the same curcuit and the two/three brake lights are on the same curcuit, while the front is the same. on euros however the left hand side is usually wired together (left headlight and left tail) and the right the same. think BMW (edit: E30) is independent in every corner though im not sure though i havent investigated that (edit: not sure if that helps on your car though)
-
The wiring digram shows all wire colours:
tail left grey/blue
tail right grey/green
reverse blue/white
brake left green/yellow
brake right green/blue
blinker left blue/red
blinker right blue/black
ground is always brown
should point out that you need to connect brake and tails on the connector plug to either the left or the right, not both. i made that mistake. probably the one that the high stop doesnt run off for the brake would be best put it probably doesnt matter

umm electronic seat controls + fixed back bucket seat = ????
i would think he means the sliding back and fourth only, not the relining or other features

The m20 TPS is just a switch, which tells the ECU, idle, partial load, or wot. It is not varible like on newer engines such as m50's and newer. M20's with an automatic transmission and selectable sport modes had a slightly different TPS, which included the normal TPS for the engine ECU and the variable one for the transmission ECU.
You can easily test your TPS, by checking for contiunity with a multi meter, im not sure of the pin connections, you will have to find that yourself, or trial and error. But with the throttle closed, 2 pins should be connected, with it partially open, none should be connected, with it at wot 2 should be connected (different to the ones when it was closed).
Sometimes they can fill up with oil and not make proper electrical connections inside, or they become out of adjustment and so it either reads partial throttle or wot (it wont sense idle). In my experiance this will make the engine run extrememly rich
Thanks very much! ill let you know how i get on with that

I fixed all my M20 BMW without scnaner.the wcaner onlywork for me is turn off the light on the dash.your fuel alot problem may be the engine never runs warm.If you really know the TPS sensor.try to find a secondhand to replace.
Temperature gauge is on the middle once the car is up to temp. Rises a bit with spirited driving, but will then go back to normal again. Im not sure if its the TPS or not. My B20 one is a WOT TPS i am told, anyone know ifi can use the one from my 88 South African spec 325i M20?

Ive got a zf 5 speed box, its been drained but im not sure how much oil to put in from dry. Have read in my workshop manual that they only need 1L from dry but it doesnt sound like enough. Does anyone know for sure?
Cheers Mike.
my G240 used about one and a half bottles (1.5L)...

pretty sure that needs a cert? not 100% sure though

With a scanner connected you will get NO fault code for TPS
In live data (dependant on TPS switch type) you will get:
Idling
Partial load
Full load
Thats all, no other data for TPS
About the only thing you get of any use with a scanner in live data is, temperature sender unit values, which you will need to confirm with a infa red laser temp reader & TPS on/off values as above.
Does that answer your TPS question ? or can I help in any other way ?
Can anything else be gained at all? like not regarding the TPS? or just this? Thanks for furthering my learning
Watch out Glenn, he has owned 3 E30's and worked on many.... AND he is veteran member of Bimmerfest and R3v.... you can't possibly argue with someone with such vast experience in BMW's!!!!!!!! AND he has a master's degree in opening his mouth to change feet to boot.....
Glens sidekick? i should point out i dont claim to be better or worse than him in anyway, im saying i have experience with E30s. i dont have experience with other BMWs because i dont own them, but i dont know where i said that in my post and you got that idea from anyway. Maybe you could contribute to my thread with your suggestions on the matter? it would be greatly appreciated
-
And there was me thinking you'd been reading the posts in your own thread.... both
and
answer your question do they not ?
Regarding the TPS.
Ill rephrase my question:
What information can I gain from using a scanner on nn E30 M20B20??? Its really not that hard a question guys! I know its not "nothing" because why does it exist?
And before anyone gets on my case about not replying instantly as you for some reason expect, i am off to a funeral and will be home tonight and i wont reply untill then

* Shock horror *
Member gets lippy after not getting the answer they want.
Listen mate, you asked if someone local had a scanner. If someone had anything to help Im sure they wouldve said so by now. Youve been told by two members to try either Mike at Porirua Euro or Vijay at Page. Both are experts in e30s yet youve chosen to ignore the advice.
Glenn (both a forum sponsor and BMW mechanic of god knows how many years experience) comes on and tells you exactly what everyone else is thinking bot only do you chose to ignore the advice, you decide to pick a fight.
So you have two choices. Either take the advice your being offered or continue on by yourself, because your not going to make any friends continuing on like this.
I am not trying to pick a fight. im new here and it would not be in my best interest to do so. Ive been on forums long enough to have seen people try to pick fights with other people and admin and it gets them no where except off the forum, banned or otherwise.
Im a naturally inquisitive person. if someone tells me something wont work etc as Glen did, then i am asking WHY it wont work. i will decide whether or not to go to said people when i know what information i can gain from it! Im not ignoring anyone!
-
Been offered a few 1000 for mine as well: ETHRTY (E30) but i dont wanna sell it! im sure i could get more than that if i wanted to sell it anyways
-
Thanks for this information
-
yes that bolts up to your M40. that gearbox is featured on M20, M30, M40 and M70s, and can be made to fit M50 and M60 aswell but is not the standard box as far as i know.

I would, 240 fan bake and serve them up with some rice
