Scored a cheap 525i (...thats actually a 523i)

Ahhh I see, I thought that there were underlying problems that needed attention which justified their selling price. Surprised they let it go for $500 after just getting all that fixed hahahahah. I think your plan sounds good, especially if you do want something you will hang on to for a while. Find one in the specs you want and go for it, preferably low Ks too as these are harder and harder to find with low mileage and in tidy condition. It will hold its value for a a true enthusiast. -

Welcome aboard mate! Good to have another e39 owner. Damn good buy for $500 I might add! Just curious what the huge fixes the owners were referring too? The things you listed seemed relatively trivial. Either way what a score! Keep us updated on its progress. how many k's has it clocked by the way? -
Any e39's on super low springs?
twiggles94 replied to twiggles94's topic in Brakes, Suspension & Steering
Wow mate, appreciate your in depth response. Definitely convinced me, LOL at the noodle and beans diet. Been on that ever since I bought the car hahahah it feels like never ending expenses and purchases but it's so rewarding. More dangerous than the casino for me tbh. My car's in the shop being painted at the moment anyway so I'll take my time to save a bit n do some research on some options. Cheers. -
Bloody hell that's ridiculous, reading this pmo honestly. No they can't charge you for services you've not asked for. I'd tell them to take me to the Disputes Tribunal if they insisted I pay, these workshops will get away with as much as you allow them to get away with. The labour part is debatable even if they were inefficient in their work. What have you done in response? Take your car elsewhere and somewhere reputable. third time lucky. Good luck.

Ahmed, did you want to buy mine for $130 (paid $147), still in packaging. I presume it would be the same part for the wagon? I unexpectedly have to leave the country for a little while so won't be able to replace it anyway nor would there be a point. I'm thinking of just getting it when I return.

Sorry been bit busy. My pockets are NOT deep by any means lol. But I AM willing to pay money if need be, it's not incredibly urgent so if I must I can wait a little till I save a bit extra coin. As for what you said, I understand what you are trying to say but am I wrong to assume these things have been factored in when the manufacturers designed the lowering springs/coilovers for a particular model of car. I mean it's not like I'm planning on putting in parts made for another car as some do. Maybe I'm not quite getting what you're saying, if so feel free to elaborate. I am no expert on this topic so bear with me. Honestly I am not overly fussed about how it's going to perform so long as it's not going to worsen my handling or affect the longevity and function of the rest of the car, but you're leading me to believe it will? Olaf any idea how much I'll be looking at for replacing those bits n bobs. -

That doesn't sound a bad idea at all. Will the spring pads affect anything Andy? I'll check out the struts while I'm there. -

Hahahaha, just want a slightly firmer ride and a little more drop, I don't drive my car that aggressively or pretend it's a race car so don't really need top end stuff. Here's a picture of it at the moment, I think I probably want to go another 20mm or so, currently have some turquoisey coloured lowering springs (unsure of brand?) Although I've heard you can't lower the ride height too much on standard struts as they bottom out unless they are the sport model? Thing is I am not sure whether the ones on my car are standard or sport as they came with it. Obviously the car is non sport but previous owner might have switched struts when he put the lowering springs in? Is there anyway to tell without too much trouble. Would preferably try to avoid the coilovers if possible Dave as the added cost and hassle of the suspension n cert probably isn't worth it for someone like me. Has anyone done something like this? http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/performance/suspension-braces/auction-1015944714.htm . Is it gna be a sh*t ride?' -
Just pondering on whether should get my car lowered a bit more. Believe it's currently just on some lows, although car came lowered so not 100% sure. Would love to see some pictures of how it sits if anyone has any with super lows, also how practical would you say it is for day to day driving? I normally try avoid a lot of driveways already as it is just because I've snagged and scraped a few times. Also has anyone had any experience compressing their springs? What would your recommendation be?

Not sure what part you're referring to, but I think best to get the part number. Then call around, and price things up or go to the wreckers if they have a e39 or another BMW with interchangeable clip. Once you have the part number you can check if any other models share the same part. Highly doubt one of us will have a spare clip to hand out.

Yeap, mines arrived. Just need to pick it up.

$127+GST from BMW, I think that's the price from the workshop too, he probably said 'around' $120+GST.
-
Yea mate, not bad eh quite surprised myself. Wouldn't trust them to do any work on my car though from the way they hoon around in their customers' cars. Sorry to hear about your wagon btw, hope you get it sorted!
-
$25 or $30 shipped. Has small crack but barely noticeable, still completely waterproof/weatherproof.
-
Okay so the part number seems to be the same for left and right hand drive versions. I think they are symetrical for the e39 but not for e46, you guys and your e46's confused me hahah. Couldn't be bothered driving to New Market today in the shitty weather, but did get down to MotorService (independent BMW & Merc workshop) in Panmure though and they quoted me $120+GST (~$140) for the cowl which I thought wasn't too bad. They did mention that it would come directly from BMW, so I was thinking I could possibly get it even cheaper if I get it myself directly. Will maybe give them a ring or drive down tomorrow and see. From FCP and PelicanParts it'll cost roughly 125USD (~$190) plus waiting time of who knows how long. So won't be going that route.
-
Hey Allan, is that part # for RH drive? I put the it through RealOem but where does it say right or left drive? I shall go past the dealership today for a quote.
-
Thought the same thing when I saw them, maybe because my buddiy's c63 amg wears something similar, cla45 amg wheels. Looks frikken good on though.

Hey Andy good looking out. Already got in and got out mate! Got a few other bonuses too. Cheers though much appreciated!
