Yeah, they are a weird sized tyre alright :P

Hi J, shame you’ve just bought the 235’s . Similar situation to yourself, bought the 235 x40 x 18 ps4 Michelin for my new apex wheels on my E85 but they rubbed ever so slightly on the inner liner  under compression due to the wheel offset. Done about 30 k’s so as new. Just fitted 225’s  and perfect and will allow me to lower the car as planned.

Haha, you found it then lol. I didn't post the link incase someone else brought it :D

Yeah I think I will look into it, it's a 3 1/2 hour drive away from me so hopefully I get time to get down there before it's gone.

thanks for all the comments everyone I really appreciate it, I think you've managed to talk me into it which is exactly what I wanted.

You might be surprised how well they drive. Good luck

Thanks guys, this is really helpful.

One more question: nz new, is that really important, and if so why?

My current bmw is nz new, my one before that wasn't. I never realized it was a big deal.

Just looked at the address on Driven. Car looks good , personally, I would follow this one up. These cars are so rare.Snooze you lose

My view is that there is more chance of a service history if NZ new and you know the climate that the car has lived in. Also spec can vary between country to country. Uk cars are often better spec’d. My car is a UK import brought in by the original owner, seldom used in wet and always garaged. I have the original purchase docs and service book/ information / wof sheets that gives a good history  of the car.

At the end of the day buy on condition, if no service history then prepare to spend some money for peace of mind.

Hi guys, I've been in the market for a manual Z4 (E85) (3.0L) for about a year now. For some reason there are hardly any manual ones for sale and until recently I haven't been able to find any. Yesterday, I finally located one; it's a 2003 3L manual with 88000km priced at 13,900$ which is definitely the upper end of what I wanted to spend.

So my main question is, does anyone know what a manual should be worth? Because there are so few for sale I have no case studies to get context from, so I don't know if no one wants manuals and I'll take a hit when I sell it in 1-3 years or if everyone does and I'm onto a bargain.

    Cheers.

Hi, feel your painful search. I looked for one for a long time. Bought a low mileage M54  2 owner manual a couple of years ago. The N52 engine is lighter and a bit more powerful but on the road (IMO) not worth waiting for in the hope one turns up. The M54 engine is fairly bulletproof. The n52 does have certain issues such as water pump, oil leaks for example. The M54 also has things to watch out for such as the disa valve and both can have vamps issues.

My car is on around 80,000 k’s and (touch wood) going great. I did give it a fairly good service when I bought it.

Havn’t come across the one you have found but subject to history, nz new and overal condition then that is a good price imo. Oh, need to make sure the electric hood works, there are drain plugs that need to be kept clear in front of the rear wheels otherwise the hood motor gets waterlogged.

Z4-forum.com is a good site and happy to share my experience of the car.

    Cheers, Peter

Bridgestone R003's ordered from Tony's Tyres, thanks for the tip @Jacko - they have a new outlet literally on my street.

I'd actually ordered and paid for a set of Goodyears from Discount Tyres online but they emailed me later and said they couldn't fulfil. That was a pain because I missed the end of Bridgestone's sale (31 Oct) so costs went back up by ~$500 ?. They have been hassle free in processing the refund though, and they've updated their website stock since so credit there.

Tony's priced the R003's out at ~$1650 but matched the Bridgestone sale price even though it was finished (there's obviously a good margin on tyres in NZ). 2 x 225/40/18 + 2 x 255/35/18 for $1,208 = $300 a corner which I can't complain about.

I'll get them mounted on Friday.

Interested to learn your opinion on the tyres, leaning to the Bridgestone’s as they seem to be good price/performance/ value proposition. Just awaiting my wheels from Apex to fit on my Z4

I have an 18 inch set but not sure they'd be the right fit for any of your cars. They were for my E92 335i. Specs:
    Front: 18X9" ET30
    Rear: 18X9.5" ET35
    They're painted "hyper black"

Not quite the recommended fitment for an E46 M3 though from the Apex site:

I'd think I'd prefer to sell rather than trade though :)

Don't forget to list your offset as well when you confirm the side. And the colour, I guess it's 'anthracite' from the pics?
They do look nice, these are my favourite style for the 3 series M cars (And Z4M)

Only reason I'll pass on them... I don't want to have a set of wheels to store (would not want to sell the M4 stock wheels).

And if you're not in a rush, I'm likely to drive up to Auckland in December, could probably take 2 wheels to save on shipping - shipping wheels is a bit pricey.

I could be interested in straight purchase of the 18”s ?
    cheers

  9. Welcome from a Z4 owner in Wellington. I have a 2003 3.0 manual E85, under rated car IMO. Ditching the run flats make a big difference, I guess you mean Bilstein shocks and standard springs? I have Motorsport suspension but was considering the H & R’s with koni or Bilstein shocks so interested to hear your comments.

Nice looking car in white.www.z4-forum.com is a good UK site for Z4 enthusiasts.

Wait and the market will come back. Have a look at what the manuals have been selling before in this thread,

IIRC the average price was around 8-10K depending on various factors. Using the cars currently on the market as any sort of price guide is straight up stupid.

Thanks, we’ll see what comes on the market post lockdown and be patient. Manual is first choice and no rush, I’m not carless

Depends what you want the car for.

If you want it for weekend fun then 100% manual.

If you are gonna pootle to town and back and not much else then auto.

I guess I’m trying to sneak another car in to the household that I can have a bit of fun with under the guises of a sensible daily, trying to keep the other half happy.
Once the lockdown is over I can go and drive a couple and if the auto doesn’t deliver for me then I’ll just have to be patient and wait for a manual.

    cheers

TBH if you want a manual one, spend the extra and get a manual one. 98% of the time buying a cheaper auto and converting it to manual isn't cost effective, and if you didnt want an auto in the first place, you're probably not going to be happy slushing around in one for long.

Manuals do come up at good prices, but obviously the market is in a state of chaos with this whole Covid thing. Be patient and get the car you want.

You are right of course, could have should have looked at the one IainR bought but black isn’t my first colour choice. Looked like a nice car mind you. The only manuals for sale at the moment have done too many k’s for me or they are too expensive, ie $17 +

turners in Porirua have an auto for under $8k I see

  14. Thanks for the feedback everyone. In terms of what’s on trademe at the moment the auto cars are better value, better condition for the prices asked. My preference is manual but if the gear changes are reasonably quick in the auto then I could live with it as a daily. Will drive a few once the lockdown is over.

Auto box is good if you want an auto. Manual box is also good if you want a manual.

So far I prefer the manual box, the 130i is a very engaging drive if you want to pedal it a bit and I like the manual when driving it.

If my commute was different I'd probably prefer an auto, just depends what you're used to or like driving. My auto 130i has 220ks on it and still shifts nicely.

My preference is manual but at the moment you seem to be able to buy an auto in better condition and cheaper than a manual and if I hated it I could do a manual conversion. Quite keen on the n52k engine as well which makes it 2008 model onwards

I think the autobox in the 130i is perfectly fine and well suited to the car.
best thing to do is drive a few examples both auto and manual and decide for yourself which you prefer.
If you are happy with either just look for the tidiest example for the right price.

Soon as lockdown over will do that. At the moment the better cars seem to be auto

When we're all allowed out to play again after Covid-19, and it's okay to go to the pub, you guys (@IainR and @Haggisman) should join us for monthly pub night (BMW Car Club NZ with Bimmersport - all welcome), and the meets/cruises/drives/trips that we organise.  Pub night is first Thursday each month in Johnsonville, though understandably on-hold at the moment with the lockdown.

The Welly crew are pretty active in the Lower north Island and the club is active Nationally and re-igniting in the south island too.

Your car looks like a bundle of fun, @IainR.  Jon at Auto38 will be pleased to see you after the lockdown.  See also details in my sig about the club, if you've not already been nudged elsewhere.  Cheers!

Thanks Olaf, look forward to end of the lockdown and catching up.
