Just thought I'd update. Got the car back from BM Workshop yesterday, happy as with the results. Just as suspected, fixed the vacuum leak, and rough idle is gone completely. Replaced idlers, tesioner and belts while they had it, so nice and quiet. My heart sunk though when they confirmed the transmission problem is due to the torque converter being faulty =( will it ever end, only had it replaced 2 and a half months ago. At least I've got the car for the meet on Sunday!!

Had that same leak issue with my 530, pretty frustrating. Replaced the gaskets twice with all new bolt grommets etc. As Allan has said, the problem is the covers, seem to either warp or crack. I gave up on mine in the end, really needed a new cover. Problem lives on with the 540 hahaha

On an off note. Almost jizzed when I came across an immaculate 95 850i in what I think was montreal blue. Stunner!! You must be stoked to own a car like that Julian. Maybe one day lol get rid of the cheap hooker

HAHAHA brilliant

Thats all good mate. Oil leaks are a pain in the tits on these arent they. Have most of mine sorted, just the power steering one to go. That sounds like the issues I had with the torque converter, before that and the box decided to die. I think I might just be taking mine to BM Workshop and have them check it over with the right tools to save guessing, as it seems theres too much it could be.

Hmm yea does have that same noise symptom on acceleration on the motorway. It's not that bad, but stitch in time... Ray had done a smoke test on it and said the intake gasket does have a slight leak but that was about all. Given the age and k's of the car, I'd say some of these things are getting pretty perished and worn out.

Cheers Julian. Just done the test pulling the coils off, all seemed to make a difference to idle so don't think its that, although 6 of them are dated 01, I think its had 2 replaced back in 2013 looking at the service history. Wasn't too bad this morning I suppose as its not that cold. A good example of what its doing, is like the oil cap has been left off when the engine is cold. I know the vanos is a wee bit noisey, but I'm not going to bother going down that road. I havn't actually looked, but whats involved in changing the intake manifold gasket?

Hi Guys Sorry I know there has been many threads on this sort of subject, but I thought I'd ask before taking it into Bm Workshop. I have an issue with extremely rough cold idle, and agresively changing down to 2nd whilst coming to a stop, only when fully up to temp. She fires into life no problem, and will idle away doing its cold start process, then about 30 seconds it will begin to surge up and down slightly in the revs (roughly + or - 600rpm). After the process stops, it dies down to around 500rpm and sounds as if its missing on a couple of cylinders, and shaking the whole car. Reving it slightly (around 1100rpm) it dissapears. After about 10 minutes of driving the problem will dissappear. However, once up to temp and driven around for a while, the gearbox gets very aggresive whilst changing down, coming to a stop. At take off again, it will shudder off slightly instead of coast like normal when letting your foot off the brake without gas. It recenty had a new torque converter, another gearbox etc installed so I'm doubtful it is the gearbox. Could the problems be related? I have had the car scanned, which came up with 1 of the pre-cat o2 sensors open circuit. I had all 4 changed to eliminate. There has since been no codes, and it does not throw the CEL on. Is this more likely a sign of vacuum leak, or coil pack issues? The spark plugs looked very good so did not change them. I did have a leak test done when the gearbox was done, and it came back with only a very minor leak on the manifold. Any pointers on where I should be looking? Don't use the car as a daily too much anymore so don't mind having to pull things apart slowly to have a look. Cheers

The Vanos seals and spacers etc on that unit had been done by HellBm at I think about 235,000ish kms

Good Sport Connor =) -
Nice car. Almost like the 7 series, people are too scared to touch them, so you end up with a lot of car for insane low dollars
-
Quick update. The car was trucked to HellBM on Tuesday afternoon. Now back in my possesion with a fully functioning gearbox, hows that for service =) Cheers Ray and the guys at HellBM, you are legend!!
-
I could stare at that thing all day... Hope the inspection goes well for you, that look amazing in that colour too
-
Yea theres no problem wtih coin, its just time wise. At that sort of price, I suppose allowing an extra 1k or so for a new clutch is insane. I'm trying to sort out a car in the mean time so I can have mine sit until it can be done. Otherwise I will just opt for the auto, then change to manual when possible. I know hes HellBm, but Ray is some sort of BMW God lol
-
Cheers for the reply, that is insane value!! What sort of wait is on that list? Even for the auto box change is amazing price... Legend Ray
-
Yeah I'd have to see a proper price figure for a manual conversion before doing anything. The cars sitting in the local mechanics yard with no gear box in it at the moment so its no good to anyone. I'm a bit sketchy at putting in a second hand box as knowing my luck it'll be just as bad with harsh changes etc or not last long, having to go through this whole process again, even though that sounds like the cheaper option.
-
hahaha economy is a good reason, but I learnt in the V8 there is no such thing. I'm lucky, my missus thinks its a good idea to put a manual gearbox in and get rid the auto. What more could I ask for =D
-
Yea sorry asking about economy wasn't overly smart haha I spend a lot on gas anyways so not phased. Yea resale I suppose is a plus, sounding pretty good really, I do prefer manual. I'll have to get the car somewhere to get it done regardless.
-
Yeah I was looking at that kit tempted lol but the car is sitting in Te Kauwhata with no gearbox so I'd have to get it towed somewhere. Yea I was offered that box but with 220kms on it I'd say might be just as bad as what came out. Awsome deal though for 600. What is the manual like for economy in comparison? I suppose youd have to change the diff too
-
Cheers for that. Yeah that would be nice, but considering I only paid 10k for the car about 3 months ago, I would rather not sink another 6.5k into it at this stage if I can avoid it. If I can get a decent box for around 4.5kish I'd be happy. Might have to do a bit of ringing around I think.
-
Woah!! Might need a bit of help with this one. Just got the final quote back today, and it comes to around 6.5k to have the rebuild complete and the gearbox refitted... My heart sunk lol I told them to forget it thats just ridiculous. Has anyone got or know of where I can get a low km box, or know where I can get a good manual conversion done in a hurry. The cars been off the road for 2 weeks, and was supposed to have it back today in time to be moving to the big smoke next week. Cant believe its taken this long to tell me whats up with it, but oh well sh*t happens I suppose. Cheers for your help =)
-
V8 Manual would be boss!! But yea that's the price for the entire gearbox and tc recond. I would love to have it converted to manual but cant afford to have the car off the road too long while I find the bits for the kit etc etc and have it fitted. I would have just swapped for second hand in the first place but chances are same thing would happen. Every bmw I've owned had gearbox issues, maybe its my driving hahaha
-
Hmm yea wouldn't mind a manual, not too sure how that would go in the 8 though, I know the 6cyl manual would have been wicked. Thats just the estimate so far, that would be gearbox and TC removal, rebuild, freight, refit and oil and gaskets etc. I didn't have much choice as couldn't really get the car anywhere easily. Literally got the car to the local mechanic on the Sunday night and just left it in the yard. Don't think it woulda made the trip back to Hamilton or Auckland. Really hope to have it back this week....
