Why? No proof yet of how the fire started, and no confirmation it was an EV battery, no point speculating. Its no different to any of the other times a car transport has caught fire. Could've been just as likely one of the euro ICE cars on there had an electrical failure and caught fire.

All you guys are so eager to see any progress towards a new future fail.

    Boring as usual.

NZ has some experience in the manufacture of synthetic fuels thru the Gas to Gasoline plant at Motunui. One of those plants is apparently mothballed due to gas supply issues... hence the lack of methanol production that killed off production of e85 fuel. Not being a nuclear surgeon I don't know how feasible it would be, but maybe that plant could be re-purposed to process captured CO2 and clean Hydrogen into a synthetic fuel.

Old school Hydrogen producers use brown coal and steam and magic to generate Hydrogen with a byproduct of a much greater quantity of CO2. In typically eco-sensitive manner the plan is to bury this CO2 in depleted oil wells much as nuclear waste is buried underground. This is called hiding your sh*t so that future generations can deal with the problem. Becoming carbon neutral is a kind of political shell game... never mind how dirty the manufacturing process might be... feel the purity of the end product :)

    Cheers...

Wasn't motunui for producing methanol from natural gas? Nothing to do with ethanol....?

E85 disappeared when covid turned up and people were paying $150 a liter for it. Gull even sold off their ethanol stash for hand sanitizer instead of fuel.

we seem to manage that very well with LPG, and we used to with CNG as well.  We just need to solve the problem.  Perhaps the issue is that this govt will have racked up so much debt bankrolling hermitville lockdowns and wrecking the economy, investing a little in a distribution network will be viewed as "too costly".  And they laid their bet on electric cars (pssst - do we have a distribution network to support the additional load?!, or the generation capacity?).

What ever happened to cng and lpg cars?

The biggest hurdle is it takes 80-100kw/h of electricity to make the required hydrogen ICE travel 100km. Currently hydrogen gas power is pretty inefficient. Most EVs will do 100km under 20kw/h (not including charging and line losses)

Tis a shame, because ICE engines are fun and some make cool noises

I dont think the hydrogen will be used in ICE engines. More intended for fuel cell use to run electric motors ?

Took my car for an alignment at a place in Hamilton yesterday because it's wandering all over the place at higher speed and is super quick to turn in, so I suspect the front is toed out a bit much.

My car is most likely used for a different purpose, but when I found the front end to feel darty or all over the place, even at 100kph I was constantly correcting it, that toe in was the problem. A bit of toe out made it a lot more settled and easier to drive.

Will be interesting to see what you find... and what corrects it.

I didn’t think the issue was where to get it from, more how to get it cost and energy efficiently?

Yep that's my point, its not very efficient to produce it from electricity, not to mention the amount of water required... not just for the electrolysis process but cooling as well.

  7. Did the little shear pin break? I think its to stop people from forcing the ignition with a screw driver or whatever as too much force and it'll just snap and as you've found the barrel just spins round and round.

Had it happen to me before.Easily fixed with a small 3mm? or so drill bit. I didnt even pull the ignition apart to do it.

Hot oil leaking onto an exhaust.

Not sure about that, I was always told all fires need three things: fuel, ignition and oxygen.
The latest hi-tech equipment that’s being deployed to fight the anti-christ that is the EV fire… the good old fashioned fire blanket! Great big car sized ones. Cuts off the oxygen.

Chemical fires that have their own oxidizers or release their own oxygen  will burn under water no problem.

Have you never chucked a block of sodium down the school toilet ?

So after quite some time my shed is nearing build completion.  Auckland Covid delays mean they are months behind.

Just ordering the 4 post hoist.  And I may have scored a 2 poster very cheap too.
Working out which floor coating/carpet I am going to order.
Getting a run of ply made made.
Security system is all installed.  Ubiquity gear for the entire network and security (awesome stuff).  Buy it using a US address and payment method to save hundreds over PB Tech if possible.  I think I ended up saving $700USD all up...

Then after nearly 7 years I can pull out the E34 from it's container and bring it to it's new home.  Ready for a full tear down and rebuild (it had race fuel left in it :( ).

Now off to spend way too much time figuring out the best floor coating.

What software are you using for ubiquiti cameras? I have them install at a site and running the ubiqiuti unifi video on an existing server. However ubiquiti has dropped support for the software, which is also now vulnerable to the log4j exploit. The software always had a few quirks and now that they have dropped it they will never get fixed.m. Kinda forcing you to upgrade to one of their stand alone NVR's or a new camera system.

I used to like ubiquiti and think it was good gear, but them dropping support for gear thats not really that old is starting to become too often.

There isn't a single street in the country where the gas station is up to the task of everybody trying to fill their car at once.

Its a bit of a pointless argument as there is no scenario where everybody in the country will plug their car in at the same time, mine uses about the same amount of power to charge as boiling the jug or cooking some toast, and I don't HAVE to charge it every day.

As for the commercial users, hydrogen will take care of most of that. (Eventually!)

Must be slow as f**k to charge if it only draws 10 amps. A decent charger will draw 30 amps. Consider the average house is only supplied with 60 amps. If you come home, plug in your shopping trolley, have the heat pump on, turn the oven on to do some cooking etc, you're pretty much maxed out.

  11. There is not a single street in the country where the electrical infrastructure is up to the task of everyone coming home and plugging in their EV. Couple that with the government wanting to get rid of gas how are factorys supposed to supply steam to their process? It's not uncommon for a small factory to have a 5MW boiler. And that's not even bringing into the question the generation side of it.

If by "failed to crank" you mean that the starter did not attempt to turn the engine over, then it is unlikely to be a crank sensor issue. I'd suggest starting off by loosening each battery terminal clamp, wriggling it slightly to break any corrosion buildup, and then tightening them again. If the battery is grounded to the chassis (I'm not familiar with the 728i) do the same thing with the ground connection. Likewise there is probably a starter motor to chassis ground strap that you can check.

    Cheers...

Woops I didnt read the original post properly hehe.
