Just seeing if anyone has any ideas or has had this happen to them.

Car has been tuned and has xhp flash on the 6 speed auto trans. After around 6-10 laps once the car starts getting real hot (analogue oil temp gauge on the dash showing 120-125c) it stutters, almost feels like a misfire but no codes come up at all when on WOT around 4k RPM.

Have been told it's probably the oil and transmission getting too hot and that a transmission cooler and an upgraded oil cooler should fix the problem but they're not cheap so trying to make sure they will actually fix it before dropping the cash. I'm on the track again this Saturday and will try to get some logs to see if they can provide any useful info.

Appreciate any insights anyone has, cheers

Unfortunately this is not a cheap/easy to solve.

Also - i am assuming when you're at the track , you've reflashed and changed the MHD cooling option to race

I would start backing off once i saw oil temp hit 140 at the track

Oil and coolant temps go hand in hand ,  just upgrading the oil cooler to a bigger version might give you one or 2 more laps

    • ER Oil Cooler
    • BMW PPK kit retrofitted ( bigger fan / additional radiator etc)
    • CSF Radiator
    • BMS thermostat  ( would recommended the Mosselman N54 Oil Thermostat instead)

With the above mods and E50 map - was able to do a 15min track sessions without buttoning off.  Was looking at doing a  transmission cooler and upgraded turbos  (stock ones are just full on heaters at this stage ^^ )

but with all the cooling upgrades on car...daily driving was kinda meh as it would take ages to get to temp before you could go WOT. I could leave the office near nelson street,  jump onto the motorway...get off at manukau and its just got to temp  / normal city driving would take a little bit longer to get to temp

In retrospect now - I think WMI system would of helped alot

120c was "normal" temp for my N55 M135i. I would be worried if it got any higher though.

sounds like new intercooler/FBO is a good safe upgrade regardless.

^^ how could you tell? j/king  That was the big difference daily driving M135i , no freaking gauge like the 335i so i knew when it was warm enough to go WOT / had to use the MHD app before

Having pure turbos stage 2 ....daily driving temp is 95-100

Did a track session the other week at hampton...think i saw the M135i oil temp got to 118 lol >.<

Reach out the Stevie S on the forum too. I exchanged a couple of PMs with him on the subject of custom MHD tunes a few months back. He was using highly regarded Ken of Wedge Performance for remote custom tuning. The downside there though is you need to do runs and logs yourself.

Incidentally this is what Stevie had to say, so unless you are planning to use e85...

"I got a custom Stage 2+ map done, but there is little to gain over the OTS map, I wouldn't bother  But different story with e85"

Would totally agree with Steve on the OTS 98 map  vs custom tune , no point with stock turbo's ....and if you're running E85 you definitely want a custom tune over the OTS maps

Remember if you decide to install inlets/outlets with stock turbos , you will have issues with OTS maps and should get a custom tune

I would prefer if it was on a Dyno and remote tuned by him. I really don’t want to loose the mhd functionality of scanning and cold start etc.

I looked into remote tuning on a dyno but the costs were going to be silly.....done all my tunes via logging etc....not sure how you lose functionality??

  2. Hey John

I have the wavetrack installed on mine and another friends e90 335i-, works really well on road and track and is a must option when running some serious power

Another friend of mine had the M factory diff installed on his 135 and it unfortunately screwed his whole diff as the pins in the unit popped out and munched things :(

    D7aulL.jpg

    2hl7v1.jpg

Was one of the units apparently under recall due to a factory issue with the unit bolts not being secure - I will give M factory its dues that it stepped up and sent a new diff and paid for all the work required to fix / sort the issue

btw - if you get a LSD i would suggest a few of the re-codes as below

  3. Interesting take about the E46 vs the E9X models John

I came from a E46 325 before I got the 335i , tho my E46 was pretty much just standard so for me the experience was a big upgrade going to the 335i

The stock suspension / runflat tires on the 335i is pretty weak imo , scared myself a few times when I was running a tune/upgraded power and a trackday at hampton showed me the glaring weakness of the setup , its probably a fine setup at stock power levels

WIth the M3 suspension parts fitted (all apart from the rear M3 sway bar) with KW coilovers, LSD and sticky PSS , I think it handles well now for the power level its at

It sucks with the model/year of your 335i john that your auto transmission doesn't support the transmission flash (XHP or Alpina) , to me that was a another big upgrade

Also when you run a ethanol map on the car, you'll notice how different the car is , that TQ life :D

Engine wise I have only read about the N54 that it has a lot of hp that can be released but at a price( no surprises their) not only $$$ wise but also at reducing the manufacturers safety margins before engine damage occurs.

These engines are surprisingly strong , quite a few people in the USA have been running 600RWHP+ (with single or upgraded twins) on the stock engine

The take from the community is that above 650+RWHP on stock block is when it will go at some stage

Any BMW with the engine prefex (N) as in N42, N54, N46, N62 etc having done 100k or more or over 5 years old is a money pit full stop

    :(

I've nearly put on 100,000km from my 4 years ownership of the car

If you already have the alpina flash, can you just load the XHP one and it overrides the Alpina one?  Getting MHD installed to overwrite my Cobb tune (I know I know :P) so would probably do both at the same time

Yes you can go from Alpina > XHP

there is a bug if the alpina flash wasn't done correctly on the TCU (https://bmw.spoolstreet.com/threads/xhp-flashtool-official-beta-results-thread-for-6hp21.1483/page-8#post-11373)

With the tune on your car , I would suggest flashing back to stock map via the cobb and then doing MHD (my 2cents)

  5. The MHD OTS maps imo are conservative - you'll be fine with the stage1 98 map , but as always when you change stuff up , just log for awhile and confirm everything is looking right

Ya that sucks about the earlier 06/07 models not being able to use the Alpina flash - if you can get this TCU flash , it will be such a huge difference as the stock one is soo laggy imo

XHP is the new option for the auto guys , not sure what the deal is with the earlier years (06/07) - you can download the app on the device you're using for MHD app - connect up to the car , run the app and connect - will show what maps/options are available

It's not optimal, but the car can handle it as long as you use a suitable tune and make sure you're not getting any knock. I need to be able to run 95 for roadtrips, can't get 98 when you venture away from Auckland.

Right now I'm running the 95 tune with 98 fuel in the tank. When I have time to do some test runs and log it I might try the 98 map, but for safety I'll run the 95 map for now.

There's also a 94 map, which I switched when I saw that issue and still had 95 in the tank.

Also, my car isn't tuned to the extreme like yours! :)

By the way, you guys should look into that new gearbox tune for the Autos, it's better than the Alpina flash. It works like MHD, flash it with your phone. Called XHP I think. Can't use it myself (DCT) but I've read good things about it.

    Fair enough :P

I switched over from the Alpina flash to the XHP stage3 map over the weekend - D&S mode are a big improvement over the Alpina version and M mode is faster with upshifts and downshifts but I don't think I have done the 100km driving range for the transmission to fully adapt yet

Loving how M mode won't upshift at redline now , makes things easier :D

  7. Would also recommend you just run the Stage1 map with your current mods initially - What trans have you got John in your 335i?

Same with N54 , stage2 are recommend with downpipes

I've found for me (N55) when running 95 fuel,

 I wouldn't be keen putting anything less then 98 on a modded n54/n55

  8. Quite a difference eh steve on E40 vs 98 maps, just wait till you run the E60 OTS/custom map - that TQ curve :D

I got the kit a few months ago from Fuel -IT as well , pretty bummed out the new flex fuel system on the MHD side uses another ethanol sensor - apparently the fuel-it won't work with the kit :(

Just bear in mind on the 335i - you can run 30/40 mix with the stock LPFP (low pressure fuel pump) - if you want to run more on the stock turbos/upgraded turbos , you will need to get at least a stage2 LPFP from Fuel-it

  9. Thanks for the replies.

Suresh, even though Cobb have stopped development, would it still serve its purpose for me and bump up my HP and allow me to change maps according to the bolt ons I have? I mean that's all I really want, I wouldn't be doing anything as extreme as you.

Also, don't MHD and JB4 run together? Are they easy to setup like Cobb?

    Hey Julian,

I would get the MHD over the cobb for the same purpose you are looking for

Haven't looked at what pricing of the cobbs are - last time i looked they were around 800-1000 US for a cobb verus how much for MHD (depends whether you have android device already etc)

Ya - I was running the BMS flasharrow-10x10.png stacked with the JB4 - but now with MHD - no point running stacked mode with stock turbos unless I was running hybrid/single turbo upgrades

MHD is very easy to setup with your car - more then happy to show you a demo if you're in auckland

  10. Cobb is obsolete , they stopped development on the n54 platform a few years ago - I have switched over to the MHD and it's pretty easy and being able to get a Protune was a big factor for me changing from the jb4

  11. Jeepers did you have to go logging 12 times. Not easy finding a spot to do them here in AK

I use the southern motorway past Dury around 2am+ .......

Trying to log my old Polo Gti 1.8t with phase 2 was hard enough! What gear do you do it in with these cars? Are you guys running autos? If so, do they hold up ok with these tunes?

I have been running 400rwhp+ for over 2 years on my transmission (car was 253rwhp on factory tune) without any issues

only thing I have done is change the lifetime AT transmission fluids when I got my car to FBO and running the Alpina flash (which up's line pressure etc)

  12. Quote

"ZB # are incremental, and larger numbers are the newer files. 7615835 is the last Alpina B3s transmission FLASH that was released and has a direct impact on torque limiters. The Alpina FLASH is listed as an E90 N54B30ATL ECE FLASH and was released in 2010. It is the most recent N54 AT specific transmission FLASH that has been released for the GS19.11.0 transmission, again this is specific to the N54.

All of the 760xxxx files were done in 2009.

There are two older FLASHES you can try. 7603537 and 7603535... Both are E90 N54B30ATL ECE FLASHES.

7603527 is a FLASH for the E82 N54B30ATL and release in 2009, so I'm not sure how anyone made the assumption it was a 2011 sport flash.

7603541 is from an E89 N52B30OL. Not even an N54 transmission flash.

7601494 is also an E89 N52B30OL. Still not an N54 transmission flash.

There are a lot of GKE215 ZB#'s you can play with. Not all were designed for making the power our cars make. I have to laugh when people without any knowledge of what they are talking about release old ZB#s as newer numbers as if they found something new. Depending on the power you are making, chances are you'll have torque limiters in higher gears or your clutch pack will slip because the line pressure isn't high enough"

  13. What turbos are you looking at?

It's between the Pure turbos and Hexxon turbo's - i'm personally leaning towards the Pure offering

    http://www.pureturbos.com/store/bmw-n54-pure-stage-2.html

    http://www.hexonautowerks.com/products_detail_36.htm?pg=&PdSearch=

Hey Suresh, what horsepower do you have at the moment, and what do you hope to get once you do the turbos?

Am around 400 RWHP at the moment on stock turbo's - been pretty happy at that power level, but it's been 2 years and I'm getting a little bored and want to get some more , with the above turbo's - should be around 500-550 rwhp on 98 and 600+ rwhp on E85

  14. Am going to remove my JB4 and switch my tune to the MHD app and getting a Protune for a E50+ map from Motiv

Will re-install the JB4 and use it in conjunction with the MHD when I do the upgraded turbos

Found a good article on some settings , and have coded the following out:

    http://www.onelapx1.com/blog/how-to-make-your-bmw-actually-fun

Engine Power Reduction to Prevent Brake Disc Overheating (FLR)

    Brake Fading Compensation (HPS)

    Electronic Differential (AX_Ref_Diff_Lock)

Will see how it goes on the track , the last one is really the one I am interested to see how it feels like as I have always thought something was interfering even when sitting with DTC / or totally off

  15. have you driven a VF SV6? They are NO SLUG, and the 300hp V6 was a genuine surprise, free-revving, torquey, and genuinely fabulous in the cut-and-thrust driving to get through traffic for that first 100kms north of Sydney.

Furthermore, they're built for Ethanol, up to and including e85.

The simple fact is, the Ethanol I put in the tank of the VF transformed it from a quick, smooth, powerfull full-size modern car that was fun to drive, into a slug.

Ethanol could be a great racing fuel where a vehicle is fully setup up for it (fuel lines, filters, flex-fuel sensor, fuel pump, ECU mapping etc); for the rest of us, it's a complete "have", foisted upon us by the corn lobby and greedy fuel companies.

Ask any boatie about Ethanol in fuel. They avoid it like the plague.

Sounds like something is broken if the car is setup for E85 but performs like crap

(I assume that the holden has all the those attributes you mentioned - fuel lines/ flex sensor/ecu mapping etc)

I have to calculate my blend , plug my laptop in and flash my ethanol map backend on the car - run some resets (octane reset , afr reset) then I'm good to go - so quite manual when I change fuels

I saw a 45-50hp gain / 80nm TQ on the dyno on E60 blend tune vs my 98 tune, I love running ethanol and if it was at more service stations, I would run it full time tbh

  16. So after reading this thread I'm guessing that I will have zero luck getting the Police to reconsider a 112kph speeding ticket issued in a passing lane last week? I was quite disappointed as the officer and I had a friendly discussion, and although he agreed that despite my immediately returning to 100 after passing, and not doing anything unsafe he just gave me the "well it was kind of bad luck to be you - here is your ticket attitude"

I really think that the demerits for using a passing lane for its intended purpose are more than a little excessive. It just strikes me as entrapment when they are all camped out on their revenue gathering blitz.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

saw this multiple times over the xmas/new years period when travelling around.....

cop sitting on the other side just as the passing lane came into effect.....thankfully my radar detector picked them up!

    revenue gathering at it's finest!
