Ok...possible aircon pump?..... I have tried to find out which side or where in the engine bay, but been unable to. On the first start ups of the day is when the engine bay is the noisiest too. When it's warmed up the sound that I hear has gone...... It's a bit of a bugger really It's noticeable inside the car with doors shut driving out to the road in the mornings. And right at the very end of this clip you can hear it for 2 seconds after I have shut the bonnet? I may re-post this query again with some better analysis and recording.

Good call. It's the noise every second or so that resembles a hammer banging on a pipe in the distance. It's constant in the time frame of the clip, but only audible at certain angles/shots with the phone cam. Sorry for the quality. If no one can help with this clip, I'll post another when I get the opportunity. Cheers.

Hi. This noise is bugging me and I thought I'd ask the forum to help with identifying it, before I take it for a check up at a mechanics. I did post this same question recently, but not sure if it was readable or if I was just unlucky that no-one viewed the post?? The link below is a youtube clip, as it was the only way I could load the data. Thanks in advance. Please listen with earphones for maximum quality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLGc5MiWvVs

Hi everyone. 93' 325i Coupe, Auto (360kms). Could anybody please identify what this noise may be? Sometimes it does not appear, but occasionally it's very clear. The sound is a knocking (rasping) every second or so ( it also may sound like a small/medium size dog barking next door) Car runs beautiful as usual and when this noise does occur it's gone after engine reaches normal operating temp. It only happens on the morning start ups. ps... sorry for the crap cellphone recording, but you can clearly hear it though headphones. Any and all suggestions or ideas welcome. Thank you in advance. http://youtu.be/ZLGc5MiWvVs

This was identical to my first car (except mine was a 63'). The Rover 100. I was 15 and just didn't quite care for it as I could have. In 1981 I crashed it into a rambler rebel driving down Mt Victoria (Devonport AKL) full of my drunken mates. I sold it to a local (cunning old man) with a backyard garage. Seen it 6 months later looking mint. Quick cash sale and off to the pub was good enough for me, back then. The rambler was worse off...ha! http://bringatrailer.com/wp-content/plugin...ront_resize.jpg

Hi. If you don't mind me asking.....How much did that cost? I would like to do similar maintenance on my 93' 325i, E36...(My oil should be horrendous) Although it still shifts through the gears fairly well, it has been playing on my mind...?

That's an outstanding offer Michael, but yes the car is in Queenstown, where I live. It's still early days for me on the whole (I now call it a project... ) situation. I'm busy with some other important life commitments right now, but I am looking for a replacement engine as a solution meantime.

Hi. The car is now in Queenstown. I drove it down from Auckland.GLWS - Have you approached the seller for recourse? They may have sympathy. Bad luck though, what a sh*t. No I am silently punishing him....But seriously don't think approaching this seller would result in any gain on my part. Thanks for the thoughts guys. I am still considering re-building it. But open to all options at this stage. I am in contact with Brent (this forum) for parts and advice too.

Bummer yes....but I agree and I do feel like dancing with the devil and will get a more conclusive test done, when I can get to it. Thanks for your advice.

Gidday. My loss your gain? If a nice e39 project or donor car is what your're considering, please make me an offer on mine http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=600549677 cell: 021 471 606 Cheers.

Yeah it's sucking big time at the minute. She was a bloody nice drive down from AKL. I would love to swap out the engine if it is affordable, but I think it could be a major logistical exercise, plus extras?. So at present I'm going down the path of trying to get what I can for it, as is? I don't have the time or situation to part it out. So if anyone has a nice enough engine I would be keen to at least know how much it might cost to freight and then fit. I'll put a post in the WTD and FS section of this site. Cheers for the info everyone.

Thank for you replies. Yes well the verdict was passed and it's a cracked cylinder head. Repair bill is estimated at about 3-4 thousand. I'm not sure I want to go down this path and think I might cut my losses. Any ideas? Anyone in the South Island want a project??

Drove it down from AKL to ZQN. Temp. sat on 1/2 the whole way. Drove it around town a couple of days and have now had it go to the red. I would like to get the head/block pressure tested as it may have been damaged with overheating. If the engine checks ok, I'd like to overhaul the cooling system. Do I need new parts for this and where to purchase from? While testing (rolled up newspaper test) the fan clutch I have broken a couple of blades This fan would not stop spinning on cold start and while this would contribute to overheating I think a total overhaul is needed. Anyway I have no tools or much mechanical experience, so will be trying to save money on parts etc....The car has a history of checks since new, most from team mcmillan in AKL up until 2011 in the service book. Thanks in advance.

Thanks. Yeah think I'll give it the TLC it deserves. The mats are tempting, but I'll hold back for now. That E39 in Dunedin was tempting too, but the wheels weren't my style. I liked your's too Kyu, but out of my league. I'll take my chances on this unknown and learn a lot - fast. I'll be tapping you guys for advice etc.... in the future.

Thanks euroriffic for your time in Dunedin. After all the options I chanced upon this and pushed the button. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=584886091 I realise I may be in for a couple of grand on some due maintenance, but after all it does look like it's been cared for and being NZ new has a few advantages. I'm heading up to AKL on 17th May. I'll be sure to get to know her on the way back down to the S.I. Please comment (goods and bads) on this.....Once again thanks for all help up until this point...ps..sorry the link isn't live, but copy/paste..

Kms are bit high for me and even though it may be well maintained with money spent, it would be too much of a mission for me to get it down here in Otago.....I simply don't have the time or energy for that. This is one of the downsides to being out of a market like Auckland, but I'll wait a bit longer...Thanks for the leads and insights though from everyone.
-
Checking it over for me would be outstanding. I'm interested in it too.

Thanks for those opinions. In the end I don't think I fancy either of the two. The first one may be a bit suspect as mentioned and the maroon one....on closer inspection, I'm not too keen on the grey coloured panels in the leather seats and interior. I'll wait for a while longer and research more. I'm still very keen on an E39 and expect to fork out around 5k for one?
