    525e died!

Ok guys, I could really use some suggestions. The car turns over normally but won't start. This is the story so far... Driving down a hill this afternoon, petrol light came on occasionally (I know, I dont normally let it get that low). Then about half way down I notice that I have no power. Its not until I pull over that the tacho returns to 0 and the (normal) dash warning lights come on. I figured I had just let it get too low so I coasted to the bottom of the hill and tried to start it. No go. I went and got about 10 litres of petrol, still no go. Called the AA. AA guy put another 10 litres of fuel in, still no go. He then checked for spark. He said its there (but a little weak) so thats not the fault. He checked and said it appeared (I'm not 100% certain) petrol was getting to the engine. Anyway car ended up being towed home. I need help. Could it be the fuel pump. Both the AA guy and I agreed that we could here the fuel pump working. But the pump has been noisy in the past particularly at start up. Could the pump motor still be running but the mechenism knackered? Whats the easiest way to check? Any suggestions greatfully appreciated and investigated. Cheers

    Exhaust bracket

Does anyone know where I can get one of these parts in Wellington. Was this part specific to the 525e (or other M20 engined cars) or are all e28's the same. BTW who is Brent?

    Exhaust bracket

hanks for your help, Its similar but there is no top peice on mine, its doesnt look as if there ever was one. It certainly doesnt look like there is a peice missing, its just a cradle. I have included a picture (I hope). Is the top part missing? Btw the orange stuff I put on there to try and stop the noise. Thanks.

    Exhaust bracket

Thanks for your reply, but I think you may be confused about the bracket in question. Its a double U style bracket which sits underneath the exhaust and cradles it. cheers
  7. I agree with Martyyn, The Bilstiens are designed to be rebuilt, its usually cheaper, and thats what BMW originally fitted. I believe Bilstien are generally regarded as as good if not better the Koni anyway, but it would also depend on price. Both are good shocks. If you are in Wellington try Mossracks (spelling?) behind McDonalds at the Basin Reserve.
  8. I have an E28 525e. Attached to the rear of the transmission is a metal exhaust support bracket. The problem is at certain RPM the exhaust vibrates on it and makes a bloody awful noise. Should this bracket be insulated somehow, and if so any suggestions. Is this bracket actually meant to hold the exhaust up, because at the moment there is no weight on it and I've assumed its there as a backstop, so to speak. Thanks for any help.

    Manual

I'm not sure how much we should shout about this, just in case Haynes get upset, but here is a link to a PDF version of the service and repair manual for E30, E28, and E34. Does not include E28 M20 versions (typical - I have a 525ee). I cant say if it is 100% complete. Still, enough info for most repairs. http://www.zag.si/~jank/public/bmw/haynes/ Also here is the link to th 'parent' page, which among other things has a PDF owners manual of E32 owners. http://www.zag.si/~jank/public/bmw/ From my own experience, dail-up is not recommended unless theres something really good on TV! Cheers and merry christmas everyone!

    Brake upgrade

Thanks, I guess the other issue is would the e34 setup fit in the stock 14 inch alloys? Would you bother upgrading the rear brakes at the same time? If I go for the e34 535 setup, do I need to replace the master cylinder?

    Brake upgrade

Thanks guys, I would very much like to do the 540 or e32 upgrade but is there really any point for a 525e that is mostly driven around town. Should I consider just better pads on stock rotors or maybe better pads and rotors. I dont know what the 540 upgrade would cost, but replacing the master cylinder and other brake components sounds like it might be a little OTT for what the car is used for. Has anybody had any experience with EBC pads or rotors? Cheers

    Brake upgrade

Hi, Does anyone know if there is a simply yet effective ugrade for the brakes on a E28 525e. My rotors will need replaceing soon, so I was wandering if there is a worthwhile upgrade. Do parts from other models fit, say E23 or E24 or are the brakes on other E28's (528, 535, M535) any better. I will also replace the pads - any suggestions for these? Cheers

    Engine oil

Thanks guys, Amsoil in the states advised me that 10w40 was the most suitable for my car. Carl, I think you tried to send a message to my email, for some reason it didnt allow it. I read somewhere that the closer together the numbers (10w30 as opposed to 5w50 for example) the better the oil because the manufacturers dont need to put so many friction modifiers and additives in the oil. Kind of makes sense to me, especially since NZ (or Wellington at least) does not have huge temperature extremes. Again thanks for all the help. I'm absolutely loving my 5 and am very impressed with this site. Cheers

    Engine oil

Hi folks, I'm sure this has probably been asked a hundred times. I have an 88 525ee, not exactly a rocket ship I know but a bimmer never-the-less. I havent owned it long, its in great condition and I am fastidious about maintenance. I'm going to change the engine oil soon, but I was wandering if anyone had any recommendations. The owners book lists plenty of options, all ambiant temperature dependant. I was wandering though, giving the book was written sometime in the mid eighties, whether anyone had any more up-to-date information. I was leaning towards synthetic (or semi) 10w30, possibly 10w40. Any thoughts? Cheers
