sooo the auto in the e46 went bang..

Recommended Posts

Driving to the girl friends last night and went to parallel park the car .. popped it into reverse .. gave it a little squeeze on the gas ... and uh oh ... felt like a badly slipping clutch ...

Seems I have blown the reverse gear. Cars at 85000ks and is looked after with cotton white gloves..

Made a few phone calls including looking into doing a manual conversion ..

Manual is out of the question at this point as upon a little investigation ... the list of parts .. and the re-programming needed to do it is going to be too much.

Thanks to Glen from botany motor works for the recommendation ... sending it into his specialist to be looked at

will keep you all updated.

Bro that sux.

Hopefully yours doesnt have the American made gearbox.

My Dad's e46 has that, and they are a sealed unit, or something, and a real mission to fix.

G/boxes have to be the rudest thing to break.

Reverse was the problem on my dad's one too. It used to p1ss out oil, from time to time when you reversed.

BMWorkshop had it a couple of times to try and fix it. (They may have fwd it on to a specialist - not sure).

I do know that there was issues in trying to fix it. May be worth getting their thoughts as they have some experience with them.

Sorry to hear Josh, hope it gets sorted... what's the total price like for all those parts to do the manual conversion?

The auto in our 330i takes a couple of seconds to shift from reverse to forwards - normal or with worrying about? There's only about 72000k's on it.

its normal .. word of advise .. let it before hitting the accelerator.

Bummer Josh.

Manual conversion is a great idea tho....you do have a suitable gbox sitting there!

I have some of those small parts leftover and its a pretty straight forward swap.

If you are interested.

yeah unfortunitly its going to take a bit more than just the straight swap :(

The instrument cluster, gearbox controller and ECU are all interlinked .. its all possible but a lot of dicking around ..

If I had another daily driver I would consider it .. but its already going to take 2 weeks to get the auto done

hehe ... well the quotes in for the damage ...

The reverse gear drum and piston in the auto made a f**k of a mess unfortunitly ..

Its costing over 6k to fix ...

If you own an e46 99-01 auto with 80-120k on the clock.. get mechanical insurance. As more than likely the box doesnt have the revised parts in it.

Warning for all..

Ouch! Sucks to be you right now! Although the e30 project kind of balances it out I suppose.

How long are the repairs taking? I'll be your enjoying the courtesy car, not.
