All I got was people, who couldnt communicate, didn't have tools, no residency and have never worked in the same environment as we do, but they still wanted top dollars. I ended up taking on another apprentice who I'll train "my way" Best of luck with your adds, but you'll probably just enrichen your advertisers Cheers Glenn PS: "poaching" or "headhunting" seems the way the dealers go up here. international 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2008 Dont mind me saying but I suppose thats how dealership servicing really get hold of their skilled workers with most of the mechanics going through as apprentice before becoming an offical mechanic. Gus 5 Report post Posted February 7, 2008 just outta curiosity what sort of experience are you after? i think you, like many companies, are finding that people think they are worth a lot more than they actually are. not a big fan of headhunting either, what you can offer your people needs to be measured in more than just $$ terms to make it harder for employees to leave (in a good way!) You normally start an apprentice on minimum wage for the 3 month trial period to guage his abilities and education standard, then you either let him go or get on with it. I always pay more than I should. Alot goes into training a person, and if he's comitted, he gains too and so does the NZ Motor Industry I have 40 yrs experience in the industry and where does that go when I'm gone ??? I have experience with aircraft, military vehicles, helicopters, marine (petrol & diesel) and 30 yrs BMW Hopefully I'm helping someone, myself and the Industry at large. I dont get out of bed for less than $35 haha NZ has a seriously massive shortage of skilled people, I know of a very large aviation company who just imported 80 guys as there is no one available in NZ.... But thats what insurance is for End of the day a bolt is a bolt. Car Technician puts a bolt in, the bolt is in for all of 0.1 man hours. Aircraft tech puts bolt in, signs his name twice, another QA tech comes over and signs his name. 3 trees are killed in producing paperwork for said bolt, and the bolt takes about 5 man hours to install. There is an Australian company who has come over (and brought 60+ staff) to remove the asbestos from the Contact Energy power station in New Plymouth. A year contract for a mere $15 million. Conti's don't pay much either as most of their mechanical staff end up at Crown lift trucks working on forklifts as they pay an additional $2 per hour. Theres a number of ways - To get tradecert in A&P (or the NZQA equivalent) you do a 1 year pre-employment course (chch,blenheim,akl) then a 3 year apprenticeship. License exams are done through ASL http://www.aviation.co.nz/ and once you have a license (9ish exams depending on what you want) you can convert it to a diploma (which isnt really worth anything anyway). bmw.maniac 1 Report post Posted February 8, 2008 I have an Aunty that used to work for Porsche in Stuttgart, and she was telling me how much the very top Porsche mechanics get paid over there - it was something in the vicinity of 60,000 - 75,000 Euros + benefits including company car (Porsche of course). That's about NZ$130K per year, which is more than a lot of Doctors in NZ!
