Socket to tighten head bolts?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I need to find a socket to tighten up the headbolts on my m20b20. Any ideas where to find one?

Repco said they wanted $80 for a set which it was in, but I'm a poor student...

Cheers,

Tom

Well you know what REPCO stands for?

Go to anywhere else that sells individual sockets - BNT, AutoOne, or any tool specialist. Expect to pay $20 plus though unless you're able to get a cheaper brand like powerbuilt.

That's weird, I used to have my location in...

I'll be working on in the car in hawkes bay from the 20th onwards, but I live in dunedin.

I'll have access to a torque wrench.

10mm torx socket, most likely will need a reducer from your torque wrench down to torx socket.

Does anyone know of a place in the Hawkes Bay that will stock the socket?

Repco, supercheap and partmaster didn't stock the 10mm torx socket when I was last up.

A 12mm hex worked to get the bolts off, but I won't dare use that for putting them on...

www.sulco.co.nz (they'll courier it for sure).

I'm pretty sure the M20 head bolts are a single use stretch bolt, so you need to buy new ones.

For what it is worth I got a 3/8 drive 40 and 50 Torx sockets from the Levin Branch of Repco last Friday night about $12 dollars each.

yes you MUST use new head bolts and a new head gasket.

REPCO, SUPERCHEAP, TRADEPARTS, ETC should all stock torx socket sets - yellow pages will list other local tool stores.

don't forget to buy a 1/2" to 3/8" reducer so you can use your 1/2" torque wrench with the 3/8" torx socket.

read the manual properly, from memory you torque them up (in the correct order) then you do a half turn, then leave it for an hour (or some period of time) and then another half turn to finish them off.

I got a Torx set from Ripco for ~$50 on a sale, probably still expensive.

Only used one socket once in 8 months <_<

You could've borrowed them if you were closer.
