from wikipedia

M62B44

The M62B44 is a 4.4 L (4398 cc) version with a 92 mm bore and 82.7 mm stroke. Output is 283 hp (210 kW) at 5750 RPM with 310 ft·lbf (420 Nm) of torque at 3900 RPM. In 1998, BMW introduced the M62TUB44 which included the VANOS system and an electronically actuated throttle. The non-VANOS M62B44 had a slightly less restrictive intake manifold (the difference was very similar to the difference between OBD1 and OBD2 M52/S52.)

210 kW (283 hp) and 420 N·m (310 ft·lbf) / Mechanical Throttle

1996-1998 E39 540i

1996-1998 E38 740i/740iL

1994-1999 E31 840Ci

M62TUB44

210 kW (283 hp) and 440 N·m (325 ft·lbf) / Electronic Throttle -SINGLE vanos;the M5 S62 was the first BMW V8 (and only E39 V8) with dual vanos.

1998-2003 E39 540i

1999-2001 E38 740i/740iL

1999-2003 E53 X5 4.4i

The yanks wank on about the pre vanos model being better up in the top end due to bigger sized inlet piping.

as a manual they are incredibly flexible, you could use third all day, even take off(bloody hard on the clutch though). Its the torque that attracts me

yes , My e28 M535i with a M5 engine , same power at the wheels as a e39 540i less torque but more importantly less weight , about 300kg lighter ,

both of these cars do 0-100km/h in about 6 secs but the e28 is just snapier and makes more noise :P
