Old engine oil.

This is driving me insane, I have around about 40 litres of engine oil from various engines and oil changes, its 2 years worth of build up and I NEED to get rid of it, NONE of the local garages take old engine oil, the council doesen't even dispose of more than 20litres and its driving me insane!!!!!

Where do I take the damn stuff!?

Find someone with an oil fired heater that heats their swimming pool.

My brother in law has such a pool (he lives in Kerikeri unfortunately) and he collects old oil from all the local garages and it doesn't cost him a thing in fuel charges to heat his pool.

To the dump one can at a time? Try your local marina or boatyard - they usually have an oil dump so boaties don't try to sneak it over the side.

Interestingly, I just dug around on the site:

Salters Cartage will accept waste oil from householders at their Wiri processing plant free of charge during business hours (Ph 278 6563).

Our local tips have a recycling depot, where you can get rid of oil. It says max 20 litres at a time but last time I went there I had probably 100 litres...no problem.

Only hassle is that its parto f the waste that they weigh

If you are out in East Auckland. Take it down to Half Moon Bay Marina. Drive down to the dry dock area and as you pass through the gates the station is on the right. They also take batteries. But please be responsible. It is the only place around our area that takes it.

There's a place on the Concours in Henderson right next to the go karting place, it's the big recycling centre

IMO...if you sell oil products you should provide a service to dispose of the waste

Feel free to drop off small quantities of waste oil at my place. Costs nothing for me to have it picked up for recycling... unless I go over my limit and have to have a special pick up.

Tell them if they dont take it all your just going to pour it down the storm water drains.

Its stupid if they want to help clean up NZ enviroment they should be willing to take it all off your hands becasue anyone else wasnt concerned and got told that they will only take 20L not 40 they would just dump it I bet.

And like you said, other people would I'm sure give up at some point and just pour it away, not me though, mr responsible I am

Thanks Glenn, I will keep this in mind for next time! I didn't read this till just now as well! I had to go further to drop it off, I couldn't believe that NO ONE would take the oil, not even the council. Pretty slack, how many people are hobby mechanics? There should be easy drop off places throughout auckland in my opinion, or the council should be happy to accept it, I'm sure that would stop alot of people just pouring it down their drains.

Hi-Tek: I tried the refuse station they wouldn't take more than 8 litres, and when I complained they gave me a 20 litre limit, with 45 litres of oil to ditch I didn't want to go through the hassle of two trips. PLUS they wanted PROOF that I lived in the waitakere region!!!!!!

So you joined today just to get rid of your waste oil ??. It took you 7 minutes from joining with out an introduction to start bagging me (my Business)....The offer was given to freinds & members on this site. It wasn't & isn't something I offer to the general public. I'm not a waste disposal business.

BTW: It was 40 litres and we said $10

Alot of repairers now charge an Environ charge of $10 per service to get rid of your waste oil ... WE DON"T

Why doesnt Repco, Supercheap & all the service stations not provide this service ???... They sell oil for DIY and then expect us, repairers that havent done the work to get rid of the DIY's waste ??

Over here you pay a disposal fee for oil changes for disposal of the oil, same with tyres etc. In saying that oil services and new tyres are a fraction of the cost compared with in NZ, so I have never complained.

It is also charged on other goods too, if you buy a new TV or computer etc you pay a recycling fee on top of the purchase cost for the eventual disposal of it. This is of course California, and all states vary.

Paint stores are having to recycle old paint ( I remember when Resene started their paintwise program). I dont think it will be long before vendors have to recycle oil in a similar fashhion.

I would consider Glenns offer of $10 for 40 litres to be very reasonable
