Hi there,

On the front panel section under the bumper there is a couple of covers, I think one of them covers a towing hook. Will you sell the left-hand one on its own? (The panel beaters lost mine when they took it off to repair a ding earlier this year, caused by someone else...my car was parked.) What colour is this car? - it might be the same colour as mine, but I can't tell for sure in the photos.

Also, what is the auto trans like? How many Ks? The trans in my 540i won't change up out of 2nd (or 3rd?) from cold - takes a K or so before it starts changing properly, and it has a slight vibration which I suspect is the trans as well - I have lived with it since owning the cars 4 years ago, so not too concerned about it, but would be nice to fix it if it's not going to cost a lot.

Thanks

Paul

I looked at putting a 4.0ltr V8 in my E36 coupe and was told that it is not a viable project.

You have to move engine mounts, cut into the firewall etc. and once the project is complete you will not be able to change the oil filter.

That was the advice I was given by two BMW specialists.

Alpina started with a factory modified body ... so expect to do some cutting and bashing (and swearing) but it can be done.

Wouldn't be too hard to install a remote oil filter?

What oil filter?....The Jap's don't change them!

On a serious note Alpina built 4 E36 4.0ltr cars, think from memory all left hand drive...BMW told Burkard that it was unable to make the engine fit into an E36....but that was because engines were inserted from underneath on the assembly line, Alpina quickly discovered that the engine could be made to fit if it was dropped in from above.

They then released the 4.6ltr version in 1995, i was told they built 250 units...saloon,coupe,Touring & convertible.

For the 4.6ltr a special cast aluminum sump with integrated oil pump was among the many mods.....BMW built all the body shells with extra 42 additional brackets etc for Alpina.

Mr E34 aka Mr Alpina.....my family should have stayed in Europe.

The early V8 engines run remote oil filters anyway

cant see why you cant change the oil filter its right up on top .

yes i was too thinking of fitting to e36 coupe , i have a donar shell sitting here now thats has a sleight frontal .

so i could just unbolt the front off anyway and use it a s a test jig.

the problem they had in euroland is that the brake master cylinder is right in front of the brake pedal so they had to run the hydro brake system (to clear the left side of the engine). but the RHD cars have the brake booster well up high on the right side ,well out of the way of the engine .

main problems is the manufactring engine mounts , doing a race car dry sump system or copying the alpina/hartge custom sump and oil pump .

also alpina fitted teh complez e38/e34 abs traction control box which i wouldn't bother with .

also making sure the headers clear the steering shaft .

also would have to maybe move the ABS pump forward up behind the headlight.

and not mention finding 5 spd manual v8 gearbox in euroland for less than 500euro's
