I use DC++ to download my stuff. Bit of a pain to use, but no malware like kazaa has. ps. if you need to use kazaa, download kazaa lite which is a hacked version which is minus the bad stuff.

I've read articles where MP3s are doing the damage as the industry thinks.

One article points to the following reasons:

1) People have replaced most of their vinyl, tapes etc to CD by now

2) Decline in 'singles' buying

3) Increase in other enterainment options such as video games, DVDs etc

4) No big 'fad's such as Britney's, Michael Jackson etc. selling multi-millions $$ in sales

5) I can't remember what else

"Movies, software and video games are actively downloaded, and yet these industries have continued to grow since the advent of file sharing,". Reasons for the decline in music sales include, they suggest, "poor macroeconomic conditions, a reduction in the number of album releases, growing competition from other forms of entertainment such as video games and DVDs - video game graphics have improved and the price of DVD players and movies have sharply fallen - [and] a reduction in music variety stemming from the large consolidation in radio along with the rise of independent promoter fees to gain airplay". .... the top 25 per cent of albums - those with sales of 600,000 copies or more - one extra copy was sold on average for every 150 downloads. "Kazaa and co ‘not cause of music biz woes’, say Profs", Tony Smith Tuesday 30th March 2004

It still affects the industry though, but maybe not as much as the Recording Industry lets on. There are a few study's that have been carried out on this.

it really is a shitty thing to do, i mean i havent activly gone out to purchase a music cd for like years now, and i have a massive collection... i try to attend gigs as often as $$ permits to show my support.

it sucks really, as we are stealing from the artists, i mean you dont get anything else in the world for free, you get a product and you pay for it, simple. Now music listeners seems to not abide by that rule. i think there will be harsh penaltys brought in soon. they have to draw the line somewhere.

(just dont start that line with me!!)

(note: i do not have any illegal music shared to public and any files i do hold are only back up files for myself :thumb: )

When I was a student and poor I was the king of piracy, I even forged documents and vouchers to survive...haha, I think I personally ruined it for everyone at the Outback in H-town, but circumstances always have precedence.

These days the piracy is contained to the porn as the conscience sets in and the reality is pirated stuff really doesn't cut the quality mustard. I mean, what's the point in having hi-fi headphones (Sennheiser rocks!) if you're only going to listen to a crap rip???????

We all rip everything at max quality here at work and leave it on our file server, something close to 40GBs of mp3's now, but they're all ligit as we can produce a CD for every single one of them...I wreckon this kind of sharing is aye okay although i've quit my job and start a new one in the CBD soon so there's a headache...don't think i'll bother deleting any...

I fully agree there Carl!

I'll d/l something, and if i like it, i'll buy the CD. My cd collection is around 250, and i have a couple of filled 40gig iPods, but i'd say 80% of my music is legit.

d/l music quality is so crap there are so many variables!

Although i am getting slightly sick of 256k AAC choones, i might have to invest in a headphone amp :mosh: for my Beyerdynamic headphones.

Recommendations for headphones?? I've got an IPOD, and am using the street style sony headphones.

I agree. Most of mp3 collection is from my vast collection of CDs. A lot of my stuff would be bootlegs of live shows etc. I like to also download albums before they are released and then buy the album if its worthwile. Sort of like, a 'try before you buy' kind of attitude ;)

the problem that the record compnays and artists have with this is most people (myself included) try and dont ever buy.. which is poo but free stuff is always better than paying for it!.. i know quality blah blah, but care.. its free!!

ps. support artists i was / am one myself!!

Headphones are like speakers in the hi-fi world, there's quite alot of good names and it comes down to price range really.

Go to a hi-fi shop with your ipod and ask to borrow their headphones to listen off your ipod. Use your iPod since that's what you'll be using the most so that's what you want to test them with. Headphones are an indiviual choice with open and closed types and (un)amplfied units.

I got some Sennheisers from that audio place above freedom furniture in Thorndon...can't remember the name of the place but they've got a few good brands - They have Sennheiser and Koss from memory plus other ones way out of my league.

Don't go to that hifi audio place in the cbd, forgot the name, they're way over priced.

Do you have a dock for your Pod?

Use the level line out of the bottom of that, it's un amplified, and then run that to a headfone amplifier, and you'll get a much better sound than using the iPod's built in amp.

Cool. Cheers guys. I'll take a look at the place in Thorndon.

Yup, i have 2 docks (one at home, one at work), but primarily used for plugging into my computers. I'm talking more for when I'm around town. Will an headphone amp do the deed straight into an ipod?
