Guest Simon* Report post Posted September 15, 2009 I'm looking, on behalf of a friend, for a new car. Essentially I want the most car I can get for approx 6K. Ideally (but not exclusively) it will be: - manual - less than 10 years old - less than about 160,000km - have a few safety features - less than 3L - have some style, perhaps some sporty character - not a tiny shopping basket - no Ford Ka, no Daihatsu nasties - NOT a Subaru of any kind Thought I'd let you put your time wasting abilities to work and I'm curious to see your suggestions and opinions. To give a starting point she likes Golfs (esp Mk4's but the price range excludes them really), E36's, Pug 206's, Alfa 156's, Corollas Go!
antil33t 90 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 1.8 Manual Lancer (Australian Assembled kind) Mum has one... though, very few safety features.... just Airbags, no ABS or traction. Some have a nice "ground effects" body kit.

antil33t 90 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 Hmm, You probably don't like Hyundai's either... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/C...n-241977192.htm But it's a reasonable deal...
*Glenn* 854 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 $6,000 is going to be the limiting factor Simon
Mark 178 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 Corolla RunX - new shape. Has the 140kw Celica VVTi engine mated to a 6 speed gearbox... pretty quick cars and very spacious / economical. Oh, just saw you want to spend 6k... these start at around 9. Mondeo ST24?
Guest Simon* Report post Posted September 15, 2009 $6,000 is going to be the limiting factor Simon I know, and there is some stretch in that. But I still think you can get a lot of car for $6K

Oh, just saw you want to spend 6k... these start at around 9. Mondeo ST24? One of those Corolla's would be ideal but stretching to budget just too far - unless we can find one at Turners etc going for sub 8K Although I don't rate the Mondeo, I'll have to consider them
Guest Simon* Report post Posted September 15, 2009 Mondeo ST24?Is this what you mean? It made me vomit a little in my mouth - I think I'll be ok though. I can safely say that she won't like it

Guest Simon* Report post Posted September 15, 2009 I'd rather put her in an E36 TBH, but fair enough - talk to me of Mondeos people. They look like ass, what are their redeeming features?
Guest Simon* Report post Posted September 15, 2009 Am slightly preferring this one http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/C...n-240390322.htm And I know you'll say "but that's over $6K!!" but that's ok because I'll say "Tough! My game, my rules"
Forrest 35 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 156's...so cheap atm, do it. As long as they don't break like all Alfa's usually do weekly.
Mark 178 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 New shape is far better if you can find one in your budget. A lot nicer to look at. Mondeos are a fairly plain car but they're well put together and go really well. The 2 litre is pretty peppy (same engine as Focus) and maintenance isn't expensive. antil33t 90 Report post Posted September 15, 2009 Just delete the manual requirement and throw her in a E36 325i or something
