e30 318is import

Recommended Posts

I've got an average 1990 E30 318is with 130k miles on it, but still great fun to drive. I reckon I could only get £1000 for it if I sold it here in the UK. What do people think about bringing it with me when I move to NZ next year? It's going to cost me about £1200 to get it to Auckland apparently - so I'd have to be looking at selling it for around $6000 or so if I wanted to get my money back on it, I haven't seen any for sale on websites in NZ.

Does that mean they don't exist? If I keep it for a while would I have trouble getting parts etc?

Appreciate your comments.

my understanding of 318is's is that they are very rare here, there are a few around but not very many and when they come up for sale they sell quick.

However, if you were to bring your car over you wouldnt be able to get it on the road - our government and LTSA (land transport safety authority) have bought in tough new importing laws where you cannot import a pre-1996 car unless it conforms with various frontal impact standards - and it has to have 2 front airbags minimum. Unfortunatly the e30 doesnt comply, neither does the e34 - even with 2 airbags - some random sh*t to do with the manufacturer. However your could bring your car over and sell it for parts (but who would want to do that to their car!!!) or you could bring it over here, buy an e30 shell or cheap e30 and swap everything over and get it certed etc and have your car that way. Its a hell of a lot of work tho, so its up to you i guess!

But as i said, if you were to part it out over here you would make a mint - plenty of e30 owners would want parts like the gear box (it is the dog leg one isnt it?) And the engine etc.

Also, if you do bring it over, id choose the shipping firm very carefully - a member on here (martyyn i think) bought his awsome 7 over and whilst in transit the whole interior got moisture damage and started to mould, and the shipping company werent careful with his car either - a few dents that werent there before it went to them... but ill leave that to him to tell the story properly...

Good luck with your move and let up know what you decide to do with your car! and post some pics of it if you can!

Without twin airbags you wont be allowed to bring it over. Im not sure about being allowed to bring it over as parts either but I could be wrong.

I came over from the UK with my 740 about six months ago so if you have any questions about importing a car feel free to PM me.

Cheers

Excellent, do you end up having to pay gst or anything on the parts you sell ? I cant remember exactly what it was I paid for when I came over.

Ive never been sure of this but someone was telling me a while ago that if I was to sell my 7 within 12 months of arriving that I would have the tax man chasing me down if they found out.

Not that I would sell of course ;-) but I thought that once it was here I was free to do what I liked.

One interesting thing I noticed this week was someone sold a set of staggered Alpinas on TradeMe and they only went for a grand. Now I say only, those things are like rocking horse sh1t in the UK, it took me 12 months to find a set that werent bent beyond recognition and to see some here go for so little suprised me.

Mmmmmmmmmm.....Alpina's

Cheers

Wow, that all sounds way too complicated! That's a real shame. I had this idea that the import laws would be similar to Aus. The info I had for them was that cars over 15 years you didn't have to pay any GST or import duty on.. sounded almost too good to be true though, so was probably wrong!

Thanks for the advice, I guess I'll be looking out for the prices of Holdens now.... :(

I wish it was that good for us - im really gutted that its not, becasue we are missing out on some of early 90s performance rocket ships that seemed to slipped during the later half of the decade

(eg R32 skylines, A31 cefiros, e30s, e34s, early evos etc)

:lol::lol:

ha ha, I laughed my socks off at that... I was only kidding!

My first serious car was a 1988 Golf GTI 16v (sorely missed, an absolute skyrocket), followed by Merc 190 (yuck!!), then finally my 318is. I think I'd rather shoot myself than drive a Holden... or infact anything other than a bimmer now.

there is nothing wrong with a holden - or a ford if you want to go that far - they are cars designed for a purpose which i think they serve rather well.... Even the base model VR/VS commodore has a great feel to it, i would buy one - the 3.8 ectotec v6 goes bloody hard!

f**k yeah, even if it does shake the interior to bits.

Actually, i think it manages to do that by itself

But seriously, if buying new, best bang for buck is from a Holden or Ford. A loaded 1 series is the same price as an XR8 or SS V8 :mosh: .

Wouldn't go near anything older than the current range of both brands tho :puke:

Personally I dont think its worth the hassle and money to import an old 318is, u cant register it for road use.

For parts? well the only thing someone mite need out of your car is M42 engine and possibly the ABS setup. Everything else is readily available for E30s in NZ. I mean u could buy the bottom of the line 318i for like 1500-2000 with wof and rego and the shipment from UK alone will be worth around $4000 by guess.

If this was like an M3, it would be worth it. Even going the dodgie way of forging the chassis number etc. All u have to do is simply steal another cars identity. So buy shitty coupe E30 with rego, and simply get that chassis code stamped on the M3 Chassis and conceal the old one. So your car will be registered as say 318i but it actually is an M3. Get a cert as well to say u got like a different engine/running gear etc from stock 318i. eg: on the plate it will say engine swap or something like S14 instead of M40.

I know wider wheel arches will give it away to an enthusiast that its an M3. But in theory its all legit.

Oh man i got some big admitting to do.

I was a Holden fan until Mum and Dad got the Bimmer.... Sorry guys :(

But i still like the GTS 300 and the Monaro, They go like hell. VX and VY Clubbies are pretty cool too.

I agree with E30_318i for his Wouldnt go near anything older... Apart from VX/VY

------------------------------ SEPERATE TOPIC--------------------------------------

I rather push my BMW than drive you MERCEDES :D I wish someone could make a sticker like that, and then we could do a huge group buy and have one each to stick on the lower rear window (or anywhere else for that matter)

I'm still a fan of both brands, was gunna get a V8 Holden, but thankfully I realised BMWs are better in every way :P

Personally I like the fact that BMW/Mercedes/Audi rivalry (if there is any) hasn't sunken down to the childish, head-up-the-arse attitude displayed by A LOT of Holden and Ford fans. You'll know what I mean if you check out their forums. Just makes you glad you're driving a bimmer and not one of them.

Check out Trademe's "Community" and have a look at Holden vs Ford. (If its still there) It had stuff like " Fords better" "Go Holden". Then go check out Ratemyride and it'll say "Ford sucks ass go Holden" and "Ford is sh*t get a Holden , ETC , At least BMW Mercedes rivalry isn't as childish as that, they are both good in their own way, its just whichever one your prefer , you prefer is suppose. But personally i prefer BMW (DUH :D ) But i suppose if i had a ride in a Mercedes or Audi i'd be quite pleased as well. I like the Bimmersport stickers, maybe we should "Stick" :D to them.

I like Holden styling. I used to own a VK when I was at uni. 3-spd Auto box that would pull a wheel spin for a good 30 or 40 metres at the lights without having to drop it in gear. Just select D, release brake and stand on the gas - hard! Only pro was aerodynamics - front used to lift up at 180 and I'd lose steering - f**ken scary in a heavy beast like that. Sold it as it was too gas-hungry, cost $50 to fill when gas was under a dollar a litre, and only went 450km on that with above driving style. (Of which I have now grown out of - I haven't had the bimmer over 120 and that was during a passing manoeuver :) )

Holdens and fords are tractors though which I think was the point of the pic.

I have driven a selection of older Mercs and Audi's like an old 1977 230C, a 190E 2.3 (with the cosworth engine), a couple of Audi 80's and 100's, and a nineties A4, and although I really liked them all, I still prefer the bimmer. Audi's go really hard and have cool interior, but I don't like the exterior styling although I do like the new grilles. Mercs have cool exterior styling - love the W124!!! but they are much heavier, there seems to be less feel when driving them, and although the 190E 2.3 went like a cut cat, I just didn't feel it was as much of a drivers car as an E30 325 say.

As far as the original topic goes - not worth the hassle dude. Sorry.

Oh and as far as this goes:

I know wider wheel arches will give it away to an enthusiast that its an M3. But in theory its all legit.

Laughing my ass off - in theory its all legit - hahahaha!

hahah if you want a swimming pool in your boot!

I thought that was E30s

Nothing wrong with the plastic pigs though. They sound the part too.

Too bad a stock E30 325 is nearly as fast as one.

I think the VN SS Grp A was the best. 255kmh sedan in 1990 :mosh:
